Just came back from a 3 week trip with the M2 .. HNL to MNL to BKK and back.
Short answer: I Loved it.

Being my first Notebook, and using a 21" Monitor with a Large clicky MS Natural Keyboard "normally",
When I first started using the M2 it was a shock.
SXGA on 14" for my Bad Eyes, had too small fonts and the keyboard took some getting used to.
But, once I tweaked the Display ... using WinXP accessibility settings ...
all was fine.
After 3 weeks with the M2 I even got so used to the Keyboard feel that I can actually type faster on the M2 (vs my MS Natural Keyboard). LoL
* and yes, there is a nice place to rest your palms below the keyboard. Did not realize how important that was.

I actually wanted a 15" IBM at first ... but, wanted a Notebook that could also last a 10 hour flight without changing a battery.
So, I had to go down to a 14" and Price wise the Toshiba for the features was much better than the IBM, particularly when you buy the Full 3-year idiot proof protection.

On this trip ... I got to fly on all three classes of Philippine AIR.
Economy,Business,First
Economy Sucked and you don't want to bring anything bigger than 14" in my opinion.
The flight between MNL and BKK had no business class. And I just got my 14" and a Ultra Micro Targus Mouse on the Economy class fold down Tray.

I was flying business class when they gave me a free upgrade to first class, Yea!
Even in First class the M2 "good looks" can turn heads. And if you are going to pay that much for a Notebook you do want it to look good! No matter how much performance is "first". The M2 is a notebook you will be proud to use anywhere.

Solid, YES ... for being only 5 pds ...
And I dropped it going in to a cab in MNL.
The M2 was in my Travel Pro Bag with wheels ... dropped it from my shoulder to the Street ... trust me, you don't want to be dropping your New notebook on a Manila Street!
It also survived being wheeled around two separate trade shows .... across bumps and Taped over power cords.
I must have wheeled this Notebook at least 5 miles! (including airports and X-ray machines)

As far as "build" quality ... this is something I noticed and liked ... Changing
Battery’s in the back and switching the DVD drive to the Slim Battery was smooth. I like the way the parts just slides out and snapped in. That to me feels like quality. And I buy "stuff" for a living.

I also have a thought about the thickness.
The M2 might not be the thinnest ... but, it might help the cooling and the durability. I have always liked larger cases for my desktops to keep things cool.
And cool is always good.

Ok, you want to know what impressed me most?
With the 12-cell and slim battery combo ... the 9.5 hour flight was no problem for this M2!
I know now I can work confidently on anything and not have the battery’s go down.
I ran Cut and Paste Macros in Excel across to Word constantly ... viewed HTML web pages after editing them .. Ran a few slide shows to show the stewardesses my pics on disk ...
and viewed many RAW and jpg files in PS CS. As well as a DVD.
Although I did not do both on the same flight ... Did not work most of the flight and then view a DVD. The flight I watched a DVD movie, I got sleepy and did not work half the flight. LoL

* Oh, yes ... I also need to say ... I was not as impressed with the 6-cell battery that came with the M2. The slim size is the only thing I like about it.
( my favorite 12-cell sticks out and makes it hard to fit in a Notebook case )
There is another thing ... when you start running low on battery ... the M2 dims the display (not one of my favorite things) ... one day I will need to find out how to tweak that.

Also used the Infrared to Print wireless to my Cannon i70 with no problems.

Ran broadband in my Hotel room in MNL & BKK, WiFi in the Exec Lounge of the Makati Shangri-La with no problems, and the WiFi Web surfing was pretty fast.

p.s. the touch pad is Great ... and having the pointing stick is nice too.

The Toshiba WEB update I thought was a nice feature ... on my trip I downloaded the update that fixes a Uninstall program issue.
And how many times did you suspect a Install and uninstall messed up your OS?
Nice to see a fix on that one.

Just in case you are wondering ... PS CS runs pretty smooth for me.
But, remember my set up has 1g ram ... 64mb on the Video

The M2 is a keeper for Travel, for me!
Do I still want the IBM ... NO
Oh yes, I might start using my M2 in my living room too, while I watch tv!
If not my bathroom

iGo Juice ... did NOT work with the M2.
I bought my iGo Juice from shoptoshiba.com with the M2 ...
* and it did not work with the M2.
Something was wrong and the tech told me I have to replace it.
I like the iGo product itself ... because I want to charge my Cell Phone and Camera battarys thru this one Power supply .... but, this was scary.
What if this was my only Power supply and it goes bad ... you cannot charge anything.
So, now what do you do ? take the risk and save space and weight ... or bring eveything and have a back up?

Hawaii-Geek, I'm glad you like your M2 so much! I'm still trying ti decide between the M2 and a Fujistu S 7010D.

This may not be the best place for it, but you mentioned the iGo Juice--were you able to power anything else with it? I bought a Targus airplane power adapter (with regular 3-prong AC and lighter-style DC inputs) for a long flight to Europe, and it didn't work, either. In my case, the problem was definitely either the adapter itself, or the armrest outlet (and not the plugged-in components). The problem was with the connection, which didn't seat properly unless very carefully held just in place (and even then, it was sketchy). I tried in two different armrests, so I think the problem was the adapter. Needless to say, this was very frustrating, since you can't get another adapter in the middle of your flight!

jessica,
No did not get to try the iGo Juice ... which I here is supposed to be the best. And is being sold on Toshiba's own site.
My problem was as soon as I tested it with the M2 it did not work ... so, I packed everything up for the return. Then I left for my trip.

I don't doubt the Fujistu is a good travel Notebook ... but the reason I did not consider it was it's C rating on PC magazines Service and Reliability Survey.

What is scary is the fact that PCmag has been right on ... on many, many things for as long as I have been working with computers.
And to me the Reliability and Serviceability of a Notebook that can be damaged much easier than a Desktop is important.

Fyi: The Combo of the Standard Battary and the Slim bay battary is a nice combo.
I don't use the CD much so the combo gives me more time ... don't have times for you ...
But I am sitting here in my living room in front of the TV ... with WiFI on to the Internet and my Server.
With it on FULL Power I might get over 5 hours.
I like the Full Power setting because of the screen brightness and speed.

Have the M2 sitting on my lap with only Tank top and shorts for the past hour and it is running pretty cool.
I'm impressed.

Dear Hawaii-geek,

I would enormously appreciate if you could tell about the material Tecra M2 is made of. Is it plastic or some sort of metal alloy?

Another issue I would like to know about is the screen. How would you rank it? Is it bright enough? Are the viewing angles OK? Is there any New technology for the screens that Toshiba used for Tecra M2 (eg. Fujitu- Crystal View, Sony – Xbright etc.,)? Do you find the 14.1” sufficient for work and games?

Thank you in advance for any kind of indication you can give me.

MD470, notebooks are new to me ... so know that first.
But, I have been working with computers back when DOS was king.
On the M2 Material: looks like plastic to me ... but, not cheap looking.
Personally I don't mind plastic if it is durable, Light , does not overheat or warp , and has a 3 year full no-fault warrentee.
From what I see and others have told me display is good.
But, maybe not as good as the Sony ... but, I saw the Sony and it was not good enough for me to choose the Sony over the M2 IMHO.
I use the M2 at full power and the screen is plenty bright enough for me and I have bad eyes.
* but, battery Life was my Main issue ... and the M2 excels at 14.1" and the 12cell bat.

iGo Juice alows you to use One(1) light, good looking power brick and charge everything you have. From Cell Phone to Laptop to PDA to my Battary Charger for my Digital Camera. and the Real power is that it also can connect to a Auto (lighter) and AirPlane plug (usually in Business and First class)

oh.... but do u that 1 adapter to use it for all purposes or do u need to buy difffernet plugs for the same adapter to use for different purposes ( such as air/ auto, etc ) ??

also there seems to be ICE 90 / Juice 70 / dual power.. whats the difference and which is better ??

thanks much

wazzup, I use the iGo Juice 70 ... you must buy additional TIP's to power your other stuff AND another "line" that just plugs into a "split" connect ... BUT, Radio Shack is now carrying the Line of iGo. So, it is very easy to find what you need now. And you can learn about iGo there.
* In a word , don't leave home without it.

The BIG advantage when Traveling ... it lightens your load.
and if you are paranoid ... gives you a small, light back up for everything you need to charge.

fyi: there is a combo connector for the iGo that will connect to a Auto or Air Plane adaptor ... that is the way to go.

i used to travel international alot when my previous life was a computer consultant with the big "O" company. used to travel on UA and it sucked. i had to purchase another power adapter just like igo because the stupid plane could not take the normal AC adapter. after i found out singapore biz and first class has all AC adapter in seat, i could not wait to switch travelling on singapore air. last time when i travelled back to HKG on first class for my vacation, i could finally run my laptop (old one :( ) during the whole 14 hrs trip.
i look forward to go to Hong Kong again in Feb with my new laptop and new ipod :) :)

Have to admit that the 12-cell & slim-bay combo is "The Best."

Hawaii, did u ever get your 7200 drive?

superfire, nothing beats international travel on first class or biz class even without a AC adapter in seat, LOL
But, for me the iGo Juice serves more than one purpose ... it cuts down on all those Power Bricks. (Cell Phone,Camera,LapTop,iPod?)

Yes, I am starting to like the ipod & laptop combo myself.
Just having my AAC 192kbps files "only" on my M2 is not convenient.
Planning to buy the New iPod Photo (can View Color pics) ... that way I can show off my favorite Pictures to the Stewardesses Quickly and easily <grin>
As you know ... when you travel a lot ... everything Must have more than one purpose ;)

johnston21, Glad you like the battary combo!
*** I know how you Feel ... there is NO Going back.
I am so spoiled using this ... I use this combo even when it is not nessasary
Just so I can run at FULL Power and not run out of juice.

* Now I will drag it out ... just to watch a DVD movie file I RIPPED while watching my daughter's Gymastics practice.
I even wear my Noise Cancelling, Plane Quiet Mark 5 Headphones and it is sooo Relaxing ... even in a noisy Gym.

NO, I did not get the 7,200rpm HD yet.
With all the DVD movies and Music I am starting to store on my M2 I need a 100gig HD ... so, I wait ... :(

Have to admit that the 12-cell & slim-bay combo is "The Best."

You mention the following
The Toshiba WEB update I thought was a nice feature ... on my trip I downloaded the update that fixes a Uninstall program issue.
Have an uninstall issue myself. Can u advise the whereabouts on toshiba site.

Thanks in advance

nsphilpott, There is a Utility on the Start\Programs\Toshiba Applications\Software Upgrades MENU on my Toshiba M2

* This activates a program that goes to the a Toshiba Site and Automatically downloads and Installs updates for the M2.
It is a .exe program with no web site address.

But, I am sure the FIX is on the Toshiba SUPPORT Web site ... or you can call the Toshiba Tech support.

But, fyi: Install and Uninstall of Programs .... will always be a RISK.
There is no Toshiba FIX or any fix that will help ... even WinXP System Restore does not FIX some problems with a simple Roll Back.
And a Great Roll Back Program TAXES your System speed and resourses.

The ONLY thing I have seen work EVERY time is a Drive image BEFORE you Install any program.
UnInstall Roll-backs ... might work. (I think) ... problems are normally you deleted a file you share with another program.

I have a question - regarding upgrading the Tecra internal hard drive.
I use my Tecra as a mobile recording studio with a multichannel firewire interface
allowing simultaneous recording of 8 audio streams.
I am always running out of space and am contemplating
purchasing a larger hard drive, say 80GB (depending on cost).
Clearly faster is better in hard drives, so I should go for a 7200rpm drive?
Or are there trade-offs with noise/heat?
There must be a solid reason (apart from cost) why Toshiba use a 5400 drive
as standard in such a high end machine.

Any thoughts from successful HD upgraders would be appreciated.
