No, and why should I?
I use a pair of these Corsair CMXSD512-3200LL sticks:

After seeing the pics here I have a question. Do you guys all leave the stickers on the left palmrest? The first thing I do is rip those hideous things off. :) Mine came with the 58 minute repair sticker as well, so I had to rip off four. ;)

II. Upgrading the second memory slot located under the keyboard:
1. Remove the four screws that secure the middle cover (the one with the power & launch keys); two on each of the hinges on the back of the LCD screen
2. Remove the two screws marked with a 'K' on the bottom panel
3. Open the LCD screen as far back as it will go
4. Gently detach the middle cover upward and outwards with the assistance of a plastic flat head screw driver
5. Remove the three screws that secure the keyboard
6. Slide out the keyboard towards the LCD screen
7. Pop out the memory module then remove it
8. Replace the memory module and reassemble everything
Eh.. this sounds like something I would screw up. Could I just upgrade the machine to 768 mb RAM by popping a 512 mb stick in the easily accessible slot under the machine?
Sanna
08-06-2004, 04:57 PM
Yes, you could just replace one of the memory sticks. I had mine replaced at the store I bought the laptop from, and the guy announced "If I'd known how difficult this is, I'd have refused to do it". He called Acer a couple of times just to get instructions.

Hmm I should maybe add that while it was a lot of trouble to figure out, I wouldn't hesitate to do it myself if I had to. Now that I know how, I have a hard time seeing myself breaking anything. It's designed to be opened up, just scary the first time.

It's perhaps slightly cooler when running on battery, but when on AC they're about the same temperature I think (at least after being on for awhile). This left palm heat issue occurs on all Acer notebooks with the same case design because the HDD is only passively cooled. Acer should have included some kind of heat shield/pipe to better remove the heat from the HDD I think, but it dosen't bother me much though

Anyone else having this problem with their Ferrari? This is about the fifth or sixth time I've gotten this screen in barely two weeks of use. The computer is frozen at this point and you have to use the power button to power down and restart.
No hardware or software has been added to the system. I think I did run the Network setup Wizard, but that's it. I've also done a System Restore and I still get this screen with the following message:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION
If this is the first time you’ve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.
If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

The most recent occurrence happened while the machine was put to sleep by closing the lid. When I opened the lid the screen was on with the above message, except that the last two values now read 0xC0000000, 0x00070F0F

The memory is most likely faulty, but check it anyways with Memtest86+ (http://www.memtest.org/) that you can download from here (http://www.memtest.org/download/1.20/memtest86+-1.20.iso.zip).
Unpack the zip file and burn the memtest86+-1.20.iso file using your favorite CD burning software, e.g. Nero Burning Rom (Recorder -> Burn Image -> memtest86+-1.20.iso -> Open -> Burn), and boot from the CD to run the test. Let it run for a few hours, or untill an error has been detected.

It shouldn't be warmer than max 15-20 degrees Celcius above ambient temperatures. I recommend that you check the temperatures with MobileMeter (http://dssc3031.ece.cmu.edu/~tamaru/mobilemeter/mobilemeterreadme-e.htm) that you can download from here (http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley-Oakland/8259/release/0310/mm0310.zip).

there is a version of ferrari 3200 which is using 128mb ATI 9200.. this version is US$300 cheaper in my country.. so, i guess, is it able for me to manually upgrade the graphic card later on if i purchased the ATI 9200 to ATI 9700 or higher?

hm my HD seems to be running at 55 celcius constant thruout with CPU running at 59-60celcius during gaming and drop to low 50s during normal use
f1meteor, you're talking about the ferrari 3000, the predecessor of the 3200, and that uses a completely different mobo than the 3200, as it is an athlon xp system while the 3200 is A64. so therefore my guess is no you can't switch video cards. of course, you can try....;)

Hello Snorre. I was wondering exactly where and for how much you purchased your Ferrari 3200? Because I'm planning to have my laptop configured the same as yours in terms of RAM and HD. By the way does the change from the standard HD to the 60GB 7200RPM HD make a huge difference? Also u know the AMD 'Lancaster' processor (with 1mb L2 cache), would I be able to upgrade to it when its released?
Thanks in advance!

No, it seems like it can't:
http://www.cd-rom-works.com/3inch_cd.htm
Note: 3 inch CDs play in tray drives, and should not be inserted into the slot-type drives like some lap tops and older iMacs have.

Hello Snorre. I was wondering exactly where and for how much you purchased your Ferrari 3200? Because I'm planning to have my laptop configured the same as yours in terms of RAM and HD.
Cool :) I doubt it will help you much, but I bought everything from the Norwegian online retailer Netshop.no for about 19000 NOK + VAT.
By the way does the change from the standard HD to the 60GB 7200RPM HD make a huge difference?
I think so, as boot up and loading apps/games are much faster with the 7200RPM HDD. See also these benchmark results I did for comparison:
Toshiba MK-8025GAS 80GB 4200RPM HDD (the stock drive):
HD Tach 3.0.1.0:
Burst speed: 57.6 MB/s
Random access: 19.5 ms
CPU utilization: 2 %
Average read: 23.6 MB/s
Hitachi 7K60 60GB 7200RPM HDD (my upgrade drive):
HD Tach 3.0.1.0:
Burst speed: 96.6 MB/s
Random access: 14.8 ms
CPU utilization: 2 %
Average read: 31.0 MB/s
Also u know the AMD 'Lancaster' processor (with 1mb L2 cache), would I be able to upgrade to it when its released?
I really hope it's compatible as I'd love to upgrade when that's available, but I don't know for sure. All I know about this is that it's supposed to be compatible with the upcoming 90nm 'Oakville' processors.

Aloha,
I just ordered my Acer Ferrari 3200 from newegg.com for $1945 USD. I had to sell my powerbook in order to run some windows applications, and was just about to buy a sony before coming to these forums. I thought i was a computer expert (i have been looking for a month or two now) and now realize i am a complete newb. I have a couple questions that i hope you kind folks could answer for me.
Actually my first question is about 10 questions. My notebook is going to be left stock for now, and i would like to optimize it right when i take it out of the box. From what i understand, this consists of 1:converting to NTFS, 2:getting omega drivers? 3changing the BIOS so that the wireless isnt auto on 4:i remember snorre mentioning optimizing the battery in one of his posts.
Could somebody please tell me what the advantages are of going throught the trouble to convert to ntfs?
Why do i need omega drivers?
Snorre what did you do to optimize your battery?
Also, does it take memory stick pro or just regular memory stick?
Aloha :surreal:
Speedotite:
1) i've never had to reformat or convert my computer to ntfs, but from what i've heard, it is supposedly much more efficient/faster than FAT32 since it arranges data more effieciently or something along those lines, i'm not quite sure exactly, nor do i know what the DOS command is to reformat. :p just make sure you do it.
2) this is the easiest question. You dont really need Omega drivers, but it's highly recommended that you get them because the standard ATI Catalyst drivers sometimes have compatibility problems with the mobile chipsets whereas the Omegas usually dont, the Omegas are optimized/tweaked drivers that will usually make your system run a bit faster/better than it did before (i know from experience) and they include overclocking tools with the drivers if you ever decide to overclock your card. they can be found at omegacorner.com.
3)i have no clue on how to do this as i have never had a lappy before. :D
4)i believe memorystick regular and pro use the same slot, so u should be fine on that one.
Good luck and congratulations on your new lappy!

from what i heard, FAT32 do not handle files bigger than 4gb, so if u need to back up your dvd into you HD, u need NTFS,
really? i have to make a note of that...:D

When you buy the Ferrari 3200 you get some cd's included. One of them contains the drivers you need for your hardware. I'm now at my work and can not tell you exactly which cd it is at the moment. Just browse the cd's and you will find it. It is just cd 1 of 1. Good luck.

initial charge is better when its 8-10 hours so it wont screw your battery like the old nickel cadmium.

Once the light is green the battery isn't taking any more charge. Go ahead and use it, but I recommend using it until it's depleted and charging it again. If you do, there is a good chance it will accept more charget han its designed capacity and you'll have a little more more power.

Don't be surprised if they can't fix it and you need a new unit. Don't let them screw you over. If they can't have a perfect machine to you next time, demand a new unit. My first unit had freezing issues that were never fixed after numerous attempts. My new unit has been perfect.

They tried that one out on me, a new machine straight out of the box! Machine exception after machine exception, totally unusable. Phoned there so called technical support and the guy was real piece of work. He tried to blame everything from windows to overclocking to unofficial peripherals. I then contacted the retailer and they got Acer to phone me. They informed me that they could not replace my laptop without first going through the Acer dead on arrival procedure  48 hour pick up if they cannot repair it within a further 72 hours you get a replacement. I told them that was not acceptable for a day old laptop and I was going to freeze the payment. That seemed to get through to them and I am now waiting for my replacement. Hopefully it is one of the good ones. Ferrari 3200 is right don’t let Acer screw you.

Snorre what did you do to optimize your battery?
I did more or less what the manual instructs you to do (see pp. 33-35 in the printed User's Guide for more information):
1. Insert the new battery without turning on the notebook
2. Connect the AC adapter and let it fully charge the battery (until the battery light turns green)
3. Disconnect the AC adapter
4. Turn on the notebook and let it run on battery power
5. Fully deplete the battery (until the notebook turns off)
6. Reconnect the AC adapter and fully charge the battery
Repeat these steps until the battery has been charged and discharged at least 3-4 times. If you want to use AC power, remove the battery pack after it is fully charged since excessive recharging decreases the battery life.
To monitor your battery condition I recommend BatteryMon that you can get from here (trial version):
http://www.passmark.com/products/batmon.htm
Or Battery Monitor.NET that you can get from here (free):
http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=212463&st=0&p=584484786&#entry584484786
Battery Eater Pro is also a nice tool you can use to benchmark the battery life as you condition your new battery, download it from here:

Acer missed out on a nice opportunity here as far as I'm concerned. Yes, the Ferrari-styled mouse is nice, but why the heck wasn't it a wireless one, given that the 3200 contains Bluetooth?
As for the heat issue, I'm typing this on an Acer TravelMate 800LCi and I just noticed that there's no heat at all on the left palm rest. This is a 1.3GHz Intel with 40GB HD.
Anyway, Fed-Ex is supposed to pick the 3200 up after 1pm Monday. I'll keep you informed of developments, which I hope there are.

This is my first post, and it will be my first laptop purchase. The Ferrari is in the top 3 of my choices along with Sager 4790 and Hypersonic AX7. Who is the best reseller of the Ferrari offering the best warranty?
Thanks
i would suggest either newegg.com or the host of these forums, pctorque.com. :D i believe all of the warranty things are handled directly with acer no matter what, but newegg is a few bucks cheaper while pctorque may offer returns on it while i dont think newegg does. good luck on your searching!
and PS: the AX7 is the same thing as the Sager 4750, you might want to go with that if you want to save a few bucks and a few weeks of wait time. ;)

[QUOTE=Okle]i would suggest either newegg.com or the host of these forums, pctorque.com. :D i believe all of the warranty things are handled directly with acer no matter what, but newegg is a few bucks cheaper while pctorque may offer returns on it while i dont think newegg does. good luck on your searching!
Thanks for the reply
Ive been watching it on Newegg for the past few weeks, its gone from $2009.00 down to $1945.00... I think I'll wait a few more weeks.
it has gone down to $1945. which is a pretty good deal IMO. :D

It's also my understanding that all Acer service in the US goes through their repair center in Temple, TX. Happily for me, that's only a little more than a hundred miles from my home.
Fed-Ex picked up the Ferrari early this afternoon. We'll see if it's back by Friday.

So then I assume its a good idea to get the extended warranty through Acer directly? What length does everyone get? 1, 2, 3 years?

I have a question. Is it advisable to ebay my old Toshiba 80gb 4200rpm hard drive that came with my Ferrari 3200? When I bought it I also bought the Hitachi 60gb 7200 rpm and swaped it out as soon as the laptop came. So technically, it's still brand new. Will I need this thing again in the future for my warranty? Also, is the hard drive itself warrentied so when I sell it I'm not ripping people off? Thanks alot.

Yeah, I would say it scratches pretty easily. I noticed some teeny, tiny ones on my lid that I could only attribute to cat claws. (Yes, I have a cat that likes to hang out with notebooks.)
But the issue, in theory at least, is what is it that's really scratched? It looks like it might be the upper or outer layer of wax, varnish or plastic or whatever it is that gives the lid its shine. If that's the case, you could probably compound and wax it just like you would a car's paint job.
I'll take a closer look when mine gets back from the shop.
Personally, though, I like the used look. Looks like it's been driven.

So far I've been bringing it back and forth from work several days a week the last month and I haven't seen a scratch. I handle all my things with care, and did also apply some car wax to protect its paint and I always pack it in the sleeve that comes included. I even dropped a CD cover on top of the lid once by mistake and it didn't leave a scratch. If you handle it with care you have nothing to worry about

I wonder how they test your laptop. "Lets install windows again, oh ok he is starting up, I can get in windows XP. This laptop is healthy nothing wrong with it. Send it back to the customer"
I worked years ago for Gateway as a technical support in Ireland and every week we took one PC out of the line and check if everything is ok. Man if you know what we sometimes discover, or in this not discover in the way of it should be in there you would be crying. They (people who are putting every PC's together) forgot to put in some additional HDD or missing cables, etc, terrible. One thing I know for sure is that the laptops where testing very well if they came back from a customer. Testing the laptops for a week to see what is wrong with it. But that was about 7 years ago. I wonder how it is now

What is with acer technicians? They offered to replace the hardrive on my ferrari, when knowledge base Article - 329284 states the possible causes as System bus errors,Memory errors that may include parity or Error Correction Code (ECC) problems Cache errors in the processor or hardware
Translation Lookaside Buffers (TLB) errors in the processor or
other CPU-vendor specific detected hardware problems. Not exactly sure what all that means, but no mention of hardrive problems. Anyway after 4 missed deliveries i got my self a refund and i am going to buy from a different reseller.

unless Acer releases a 9800 upgrade card, no you cant put a 9800 into the Ferrari. and assuming that the 35w 3400+ A64 stays in a Socket 754 interface, yes you will be able to upgrade your cpu to that.

Hi all happy folks! :awdance:
When I opened my new Ferrari 4 weeks ago, I noticed a halfmoon "scratch" that looked as it had been done by the packing persons thumbnail... I then recalled that I seen a kind of loose threds on the black cover, and shure, the "scratch" whent off with a drop of alcohol (onto the cover :mmm: ...)
Since then I have noticed some very thin scratches that I can't account for.
These scratches completly dissapered after treating the Ferrari the same way that I treat my Corvette (Zino Broos car polish). The cover is now as reflective, scratchless and slippery as my cars hod and I  them booth.
About the battery cappacity, I followed the instructions about dis-/charging but the battery lifetime was just 2 hours. After downloading the battery saving programs update (PowerNow), I stil didn't get more time on battery.
Then I tested/cycled the power settings (Fn+F3) on battery and AC, and found to my surprice that "Minimal Energy saving" was the "Best Energy Saving" in reality. Set "On Battery" made the CPU run at 100% cpu speed with battery, and when connected to AC it went down to 44%. Now I have about 3 hours battery time. Quere behaviour...

Could I check which medias you have been able to get the burner to burn at a full 4x speed? I have the same drive(uj-825) and have experienced problems finding compatible 4x dvd-r medias.. tried riteks and piodatas, ritek recognised as 4x but took 30 mins to burn, piodata only recognised as 2x.
both the above media types were recognised as and burned well in my desktop's 4x lg4040b burner.
tried sonys and mitsubitshis as well, these burned faster, but a weird thing i noticed was that it burns slowly for the first 10% or so of the data, then at 4x for the rest. As a result, a full burn takes about 17-18 mins as opposed to 15 mins for a usual 4x burn.
hope someone can share their experiences with the drive, thanks!

Called Acer tech support again. This time they sent me a new hard drive, after saying I must have some bad sectors on the original one. Switched the new hard drive in, which is actually quite easy, and it wouldn't do a system restore, using the original CDs that came with the system.
Did the F2 key after booting up, went to Boot, selected CD drive, inserted the discc, hit escape, enter, and I kept getting another blue DOS screen saying Windows couldn't open properly.
Any ideas? Was the new hard drive DOA?

I looked at your link and it doesn't add anything to what I've already tried. I've got NIT CD Maker or whatever it's called, and it tells me that I've got a CD with memtest86+-1.26.iso on it.

You didn't create a bootable CD from the ISO image. To do this properly with NTI CD&DVD-Maker see here:
http://www.ntius.com/default.asp?p=support/faq/qa&xfaq=cdmfaq&no=109
Click on New, then select Create CD from Iso CD Image File, choose your ISO file and click Open.
I don't like that you can't customize anything!
I want a fast rpm hard drive. I got a sager 5680 and I got it decked out. I like everything about it, except that I want an AMD 64 in it. They operate at a lower speed so they have better battery life, right? My 5680 with 1 gig of ram doesn't seem to even last an hour. And I want 64-bit computing capability.
I can't seem to find a computer exactly like mine, with a 2nd bay for a hard drive, floppy drive, tv tuner, ect, and great customization AND an AMD 64
Am I the only one who as a big gamer and someone who wants the best computer who can't find a computer like that?
There aren't any Sagers with amd 64's either.
What's the deal?

Well, there's the Sager 4750 which has a DTR AMD64. But, that one runs so hot, I wouldn't recommend it. If they would test the low-power mobile chips in them and offer those if they work, that'd be a nice notebook for anyone who didn't care about GPU upgradeability.

Oh cool. Still doesn't offer a second hard drive, and the big lcd screen adds money to it doesn't it? On the 5680 i could choose 15" or 17" wide screen I believe.
I thought clock speed affects heat. I have a P4 2.8 Ghz and it's hot. Surely the clock speed on this computers chip is lower and thus less heat and longer battery than mine, right?

It will not boot the Ferrari 3200.

1.17MB sounds right to me. I installed NTI CD & DVD-Maker just to make sure it works correct and selected Data -> Data CD -> File menu -> New -> File menu -> Create Disc from ISO Disc Image File -> memtest86+-1.26.iso -> Open -> Start to burn it myself. It booted perfectly here so it should work for you too.
To be sure that your notebook can boot from the CD, hit F2 during the Ferrari bootup screen and goto the boot menu and make sure that CD-ROM/DVD Drive is on the top of the list and then exit saving changes.
If you still can't boot from the CD, then either your CD or drive must be broken.

My comment is that the performance of this notebook simply is about the best out there, and that the 64-bit future will be here sooner than most people think. So far Intel's 64-bit processors are by far inferior to AMD's so that claim is just a lie. To summarize, the Acer Ferrari 3200 simply rocks! :dude:

Try re-installing the VIA Hyperion 4in1 chipset drivers (http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=403) and after rebooting check the Advanced SmartGart Options in the Radeon Omega Drivers start menu and see if at least AGP/PCI read are both ENABLED, if all of them are enabled, the better. 1.The trackpad left click will sometimes activate without my touching it...I'll just be moving the cursor around and it will click on its own.
2.After closing the lid and letting the machine "Sleep", and then returning and firing it back up, the screen is suddenly distorted...sometimes only on the windows log on/off screen, but also sometimes when I restart windows....I have to reboot the machine to get it back to normal.

Well the problem with Omega drivers and corrupt screen after wakeup isn't solved with version rad_w2kxp_omega_2567_7z.exe. The problem seem to be in the RadLinker 1.013 (2.1.1013.0) version (adjustable clock settings).
I deinstalled all Omega drives and reinstalled original Acer ATI drivers, but the proglem was stil there... Then I noticed that the RadLinker program was stil installed and after deinstalling it the Ferrari runs as clean as it should.
Once I even got the problem right after running on AC, closing the top, disconnecting AC and opening it again (on battery). The screen was corrupt so I reconnected AC again and the screen was clear again (untill I disconnected AC again).
The problem could have somthing to do with voltage drop / refresh rate on graphic memory when in sleep mode.
Well the Omega drives looks nice but I don't really need them, the Ferrari is fast enough as it is

Hello everybody!
It is my first post here.
My technical backround may be described as "Illiterate Ferrarista computer sucker".
I bought an F 3200 in order to retire my old Acer TM 521 and have a problem with it:like on all notebooks you rest your hands on the surface below the keyboard.
The surface on the right-hand side has a normal, neutral temperature.
The surface on the left-hand side has an uncomfortably warm temperature.
If you have kids you know if they have fever by touching their forids: this left hand feels like a good 40C fever.
From what I have tried to gather, the device under the "problem surface" is the HD.
Has anyone here suffered the same problem?
What is it?
Can I fix it?
Should I send the beast back to Maranello and request a replacement?
Thanks for your time guys!
X.

XENOPHON: Welcome to the forums :)
This warm left palm issue is actually normal on most new Acer notebooks with similar chassis due to only passive HD cooling, including this and the Travelmate 6000/8000 series. Possible solutions to this "problem" would be to replace the HD with one that generates less heat and/or use a good notebook cooler.

Xenophon,
A laptop cooler is (usually) aluminium surface that you place under your notebook. It has either fans, or a heat-activated fluid that keeps your laptop cool.
Here's an example (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1047071&CatId=607)

Does your F 3200 have an air intake under the HD?
Mine doesn't.
All intakes/outflows are built around the CPU, nothing for the HD under the left hand-rest.

I installed Omegadrives (without the RadLink, MultiRes just ATITool addon), but I stil get the problem with distorted screen (I even deinstalled the AtiTool just keeping Omegadrive).
When running on AC, I disconnect AC on the fly and the screen goes crasy, then I reconnect the AC and it's allright again.
Do you yourself have a Ferrari 3200? and if so have you the Omegadrive installed on it ???
I tested the AuqaMark3 with Omegadrive installed and the settings set to default (450/210). The score I got was only 12.66 fps. After restoring original ATI the score is now 26.21 (and the difference was clearly seen). Figure that out if you can...
My Ferari is now restored back to original ATI installation again using WindowsXP system restore...
I wonder if the Omegadrive on a Ferrari isn't a missfit.
I reccomend all Ferrari owners to skip this Omegadrive.

The cooler isn't intended to blow air into the laptop. It simply provides a cool surface onto which the laptop can radiate excess heat.

I have built a wooden chassis to put under the F 3200 in order to improve the airflow under it. It turns out much cheaper than the one you have Joshua, but again that only improves the CPU breathing and my +"*ç%& F 3200 has a fever problem that is not linked to the CPU.
My guess is that it is a Hard Diskproblem because the only spot that overheats, and plenty, is the plasic surface on top of it.
BTW if I put my nose on the left-hand rest, it stinks og hot metal and hot plastic.

This dosn't sound allright to me. The surface should not be more than about 45"C. Please download and install this program that measures CPU and Disk temperature. The big red chock-absorber under the disk also serves as a heat dispenser and should be in contact with a cool surface.

Thanks for your comments Snorre,Joshua and Waxinator.
What I did today was the following :
Downloaded and installed Mobilemeter.
Ran Norton Antivirus and watched the temperature of the HD.
It started off at 43 Celsius and reached 54Celsius about 70 minutes later.
I then launched “defragmentation”: it analyzed but got stuck at 1% compacting files.
Three times I restarted it, three times it got stuck at the same spot.
While doing this I set an external thermometer on the left-hand side of the laptop over the HD location: the temperature reached 38Celsius on the outside.
This temperature is what I call uncomfortable.
The right-hand surface remained at 20Celsius,the room temperature.
During all that time (about two hours in all) the CPU temperature did not exceed 48 Celsius.
What HD would you recommend, if I have to replace the factory one Snorrer (although I guess this would void the guaranty)?
Waxinator, it sounds odd when you say the external surface over the HD should be around 45 Celsius, that would be over 120 Farenheit.
Thanks again,
X.
as always, i would recommend the Hitachi 7k60 (60gb, 7200rpm), but if you need the extra 20gb of storage, then i would suggest the Hitachi 5k80 (80gb 5400rpm). i personally prefer the latter, but thats just me. the only difference would be slightly longer install times/load times for games and stuff with the 5400rpm, but in reality the performance is very close, and they are all superior to the 4200rpm one that comes with the Ferrari. they are also a tad cooler AFAIK ;)

FelonyFA, low CPU scores usually means a lack of AGP support. You have to install AGP drivers to get AGP support.
One quick way to test for AGP support is to run 'dxdiag' from the command prompt. Click on the 'Display' tab and make sure 'AGP Texture Acceleration' is set to 'Enabled'.
Hope this helps.

also, regarding the screen distortion issue, what's the latest owrd on that? Should I remove Omega drivers and re-install ATI drivers?
The solution is to uninstall Radlinker that comes included with the Omega Drivers, or simply by deselecting it upon installation of the latest Omega Drivers.

Just got my 3200 back from Acer. The worksheet says they replaced the mainboard this time.
Just out of curiosity, fellow users, how long does it take for your Ferrari to recognize your wireless router? My Acer TravelMate does it almost instantaneously when you awaken it from sleep. Ditto a Dell and a Toshiba.
The Ferrari typically takes its own good time, as in several minutes to make a connection. For example, it's now been ten minutes and the Ferrari still hasn't recognized my wireless network.
Anyone else had this problem? I'm getting a little frustrated here.

Dani: This was something I hadn't thought of, but when I checked, it was enabled. Do you by chance have any other ideas I can check into?
Thanks

FelonyFA: Try this:
1. Select "Start Menu->Radeon Omega Drivers->Advanced SmartGart Options" and make sure that all options are set to "On".
2. You can check this with PowerStrip by selecting "PowerStrip menu->Options...->Adapter information..." and have a look under "AGP system configuration".
I also suggest that you install the latest version of the VIA Hyperion 4in1 chipset drivers (http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=2&Type=1) *completely* (choose quick install), and if that dosen't help uninstall the Omega Drivers and re-install them again.

snorre: In step 1 everything is "on". I don't use powerstrip, but I will download it now in order to confirm this. I have been overclocking via radlinker.
I have installed "completely" the latest 4in1s which are 4.53. I guess I will confirm via powerstip the settings you want me to and then reinstall the damn omegas for the millionth time. :(
My question is, even if I get 3dmark2001 to 12k+ marks and aquamark to 29k, how will all of the above steps affect my lower cpu mark score (8.3k @ 1853) in aquamark?

FelonyFA: It seems ok, except perhaps that I don't have a OpenGL renderer installed. When I ran these benchmarks I also didn't have SP2 installed, and I used the Omega Drivers 2.5.58. Actually, I did a clean install of Windows XP Pro SP1 (not the Acer provided version) on NTFS with all the latest patches, and installed the latest AMD Athlon 64 processor drivers & VIA Hyperion chipset drivers and disabled all power saving features and set the Direct3D & OpenGL settings in the display properties to optimal performance. Did you try to reinstall too, just in case your Windows installation is messed up?

snorre: Believe it or not, that was one of the first suggestions you gave me (complete reinstall, non-acer version). I tried it with sp1 and sp2 with all of the options you suggested. Do you have sp2 installed now? Do you mind running current benchmarks with sp2 with everything stock so I can compare?
Again I really appreciate yours and everyone else's help on trying to pinpoint my problem.

Yes, I've SP2 installed now and the Omega Drivers 2.5.67. I'll run 3DMark01, 3DMark03 & Aquamark3 tomorrow with GPU & CPU/RAM at stock clocks, ok?

FelonyFA, could you post the output from dxdiag? (use Save All Information button)
Also, check Display Properties / Settings / Advanced / Troubleshoot. 'Enable write combining' box should be checked.
Again, if ONLY your CPU scores are low, ATI driver doesn't have 'write combining' set. I've seen this problem with ATI cards on NForce2 motherboards (the problem there was AGP driver bug).

How come you run your monitor on 75Hz while it only supportd 60Hz ?
I suppose I run it at 75hz because it works and I'm brainwashed from the old CRT study that said that 72hz plus was "flicker free" and easier on eyes.
I have run all my benchmarks at 60hz which is what the setting reverts to when I reinstall the omega drivers.
Thanks for pouring over that long file.
FelonyFA, everything looks good with your computer.
Looking closely at your numbers, 8300 is a GOOD CPU score in Aquamark. I don't have a Ferrari, but my Opteron 2.0Ghz only scores 8100 CPU points.

The 8.3k CPU marks in Aquamark are derived from my processor being overclocked to 1853 and my memory being tweaked to 2T timings (as per snorre).
If I leave everything stock and STABLE, then I only turn in about 6.9k CPU marks.

These days I found two problems of my Ferrari 3200.One is the ferrari will restart automaticly every 2-3 hours. The other is when I am playing Farcry patch 1.1, sometimes the ferrari stops.I can return to the main menu but when return to the game,it doesn't have any actions.I installed the WinXP with SP2 of my own version and the DNA 4.9 driver. What may be the problems?SP2?DNA driver?or others?Anyone has some suggestion of how to tackle it?Thanks!

Stock everything with newest Omegas and xp sp2:
Aquamark: 24,388 (gfx: 2,868 CPU: 8,136)
3dmark2001se: 9016
3dmark2003: 2435 CPU: 539
All of this was after a clean boot (no running programs) and with all of yalls previous suggestions enabled (write combining, max performance settings, advanced smartgart settings enabled, etc)
Any suggestions?

All are good.
As I look at the differences in our scores, snorre, it seems that our CPU scores are pretty close with a negligible range of differences. What is very far off is our GFX scores. This is probably what is affecting my overall scores the most. What are your thoughts? Do you thin I should try the regular ATI drivers or perhaps the DNA drivers?
Thanks again.

I'm disheartened by all the time and effort I have had to put into the Ferrari with nothing but headaches. I was able to get a full RMA and I am going to spend the extra few bucks and get an 8006LMI. I think the performance is goign to be relatively equal plus I get the DVI output which is nice. Hopefully the 8006LMI won't get as unbelieveable hot like the Ferrari does either.
I wanted to say that I truely appreciate everyone's help trying to help me figure out what the issue was. :uhoh:

Remember my problem with the overheating external surface over the HD: it is still there.
Now I have another one, even simpler:

Anyone know the complete command for XP Pro +SP2?

volume label = the name of the C drive
On an original Acer install the name of the drive c:\ is Acer and for d:\ is Acerdata.
otherwise open a CMD prompt and type DIR, the label is shown at the end of the second line.

The Ferrari 3200 performs better than the Travelmate 8006LMi on average, and is especially faster on games. The only things you can tweak on the 8006 is the GPU/VRAM and RAM timings, no overclocking of CPU or memory is possible as of yet. The cpu is throtteling, use mobilemeter to show the cpu speed while working.
Like on the centrino's, the A64 is slowing down cpu speed while not needed to reduce heat, when you launch a prog or game that needs full speed it will bump up the cpu to that speed.
On battery by default it will run at the lowest speed to provide better battery life.
I must be one lucky guy with Snorre and other that our ferrari's run perfectly
On the other hand, don't get missleaded by posts on the net, mostly people post when they have trouble with a machine, rarely to say that it runs perfectly ;)

There jsut comes a time when a person justs gets so fricken pissed off that his machine is gimped that trading it for a new model is the only thing that can give him piece of mind.
I wish my ferrari would have worked like yall's. I can't tell you how many hourse I spent trying to diagnose a low performance problem and how many hours reinstalling the entire OS. I just hope that the 8006LMI I returned it for that arrives tomorrow will be a pleasant change. The DVI out will provide much superior image qualitythan the VGA port on the Ferrari did and the Ferrari's parrallel port was useless to me.
Trust me I know that the Ferrari probably has a much better upgrade path than the Dothan, especially when winxp 64 + apps are in full swing, but for the next year I will have to hope that the dothan will perform well in games and other apps. I am alos praying that the 8006LMI won't be so friggin HOT!!!! :saywhat:

Well I got my 8006LMI today and my first impression was that it was a very nice machine, very akin to the Ferrari. The second thing I noticed was the very little heat that this thing produced.
Unfortunately, the badnews is that this particular unit is much worse in benchmarks and games than my crappy Ferrari. With the newest Omega drivers and a clean install I was oinly able to get 8.8k 3dmarks at stock speeds and everything set to high performance. In Aquamark3d with an overclock of 450/230 (highest this machine will overclock) I only received 22k overall, 9.1k CPU and 2.2k GFX. These are terrible scores.
The CPU score was better on this machine than my Ferrari, but I wonder why my Ferrari would overclock to 490/250 easily and this machine can't get over 450/230 without artifacts and lockups. Very odd indeed.

FelonyFA: A friend of mine got the 8006LMI too and I've compared these directly and they're indeed very similar except for price. Actually, they use the same type of chassis, harddrive and memory at default and thus produces the same amount of heat. However, during load the CPU in the 8006LMI runs much hotter than in the Ferrari 3200. Regarding performance in games and benchmarks the Ferrari 3200 performs better over all and it's also much easier to tweak for even better performance (at the expence of more heat being generated from the GPU, CPU & RAM ofcourse). Anyways, good luck with your new notebook even though it didn't perform any better than your broken Ferrari 3200...

Good idea, here you go:
I. Graphics performance tweaks
1. Install the latest Omega Drivers (http://www.omegadrivers.net/ati/win2k_xp.php) and remember to enable fast write.
2. Go to the Control Panel->Display->Settings->Advanced->Advanced 3D->3D and set Full Scene Anti-Aliasing & Anisotropic Filtering to Application Preference, Texture Performance & Mipmap Detail Level to High Performance, TruForm & Wait for Verical Sync to Always Off, Smart Shader to No Effect, and A.I. to High. Also go to POWERPLAY and select Enable POWERPLAY, click on the POWERPLAY Settings and make sure that Plugged In is set to Optimal Performance.
3. Install PowerStrip (http://entechtaiwan.net/util/ps.shtm) to overclock the GPU.
4. Go to the PowerStrip menu->Performance profiles->Configure and set the Engine clock to 486 MHz and the Memory clock to 250 MHz (or even higher) and click on Ok.
II. Processor performance tweaks
1. Go to the Control Panel->Power Options->Power Schemes and select the Always On power scheme.
2. Run ClockGen (http://www.cpuid.org/clockgen.php) (CG-ICS950405) to overclock the CPU.
3. Go to Clocks, click on Get Values, move the HTT Clock Selection slider to 205.93 (or even higher) and click on Set Values.
III. Memory performance tweaks
1. Run A64 Tweaker (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?p=505345#post505345) to tweak the memory settings.
2. Set MEMCLK Frequency to 200, CAS Latency (Tcl) to 3.0, RAS to CAS Delay (Trcd) to 4, and 2T Timing to Enable (although even more relaxed memory timings will allow for higher CPU overclock with ClockGen).
3. If you've upgraded to Corsair XMS3200 memory you should only set the 2T Timing to Enable.
IV. Hard drive performance tweaks
1. Go to All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->Disk Defragmenter and click on Defragment.
2. If you've upgraded to a Hitachi Travelstar 7K60 hard drive you should download and run Feature Tool (http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm) that is included on the Ultimate Boot CD (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/).
3. Go to Features->Change Advanced Power Mode and click on Options, select the Max value and click on OK.

I was trying to get to you snorre. I listed what I did to fix the issue in my other post in the notebook general forum titled "8006LMI......"
I wish I had a way of overclocking the Pentium-M. That would be a nice trick.
Whats funny is that there are sooo many things I like about this 8006LMI that the Ferrari didn't have, but just as many things that this one is lacking, the Ferrari had in it's corner. One thing off the top of my head is the wireless card. Geez, this 2200bg card is HORRIBLE. It will get connected at 54mbs then over the course of about 30mins to an hour it will slowly degrade untill it disconnects. I have tried everything from the brand new proset software from Intel, to upgrading my Linksys router firmware. Bottom line is that the Ferrari's wireless was ROCK solid. It ALWAYS had the fastest performance no matter what the range.

About overclocking, either cpu or gpu: raise the speed _slowly_, as in no more than 5 MHz / 5 FSB at a time. With the graphics card, start with one of them (core or memory) and leave the other be until you find a satisfactory stable speed with the first one. This is because if you overclock both at once and it crashes, you won't know which one was the cause. Just makes it easier.
As to sythetic benchmarks: 3DMark 2001 loves AMD, and 3DMark 03 loves Intel =) Otherwise equal cpus will get higher marks depending on the version. Go see the top 10 lists - you won't find many exceptions to this rule.

Sorta snorre.
What I was used to doing from owning so many desktop units, was to do clean installs, then the Omegas, then slide all settings on the d3D and OGL tabs to "max performance", then benchmark. In the past if I left everything default, I would get horrible scores, which is understandable before adjusting for max performance.
It was jsut in the case of the Ferrari and 8006LMI that adjusting everything to max performance before benching caused me to score about 2-3k LOWER than everyone elses. It seems that the d3d and ogl adjustments for me on both of my laptops seem to work counter to their claimed settings. I wonder why that is.
I do not lament this 8006LMI trade over the Ferrari. Things like lower heat, DVI out, more raw horsepower are enough to come close to equalling out some of the advantages of the Ferrari. I will, however, conceded that the that Ferrari is probably the clear winner in terms of longevity, gaming, wireless networking and features per dollar. It can be tweaked more in terms of GPU/VRAM, CPU, MEM. It is upgradable to the new 64bit OSes and near future AMD CPUs. It is $500-600 bucks cheaper than the 8006LMI.
That make you feel better snorre?

I've put together this simple battery life tweak guide that I hope you'll find helpful:
1. First make sure that the new battery pack is properly conditioned (see this (http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?p=387316#post387316)).
2. Make also sure that LCD Auto Dim is enabled in the BIOS Main menu.
3. Install and run the Launch Manager (ftp://ftp.support.acer-euro.com/notebook/ferrari_3400/driver/launmgr.zip).
4. Set the Wireless LAN Boot Status to Wireless LAN Always OFF and the Bluetooth Boot Status to Bluetooth Always OFF.
5. Install the latest versions of the AMD Mobile Athlon 64 processor driver (http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_871_12474,00.html) and the Omega Drivers (http://www.omegadrivers.net/ati/win2k_xp.php).
6. Go to the Control Panel->Power Options->Power Schemes and select the Max Battery power scheme.
7. Go to the Control Panel->Display->Advanced->POWERPLAY and select Enable POWERPLAY. Also click on the POWERPLAY Settings and make sure that both High & Low Battery are set to Optimal Battery Life.
8. I recommend using DVDIdle (http://www.dvdidle.com/dvd-idle.htm) to save battery life while playing CD/DVDs.
9. If you've upgraded to a Hitachi Travelstar 7K60 hard drive you should download and run Feature Tool (http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm) that is included on the Ultimate Boot CD (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/).
10. Go to Features->Change Advanced Power Mode and click on Options, select the Min value and click on OK.
Optional advanced battery life tweaks:
11. Go to the Control Panel->Power Options->Power Schemes and select the Always On power scheme.
12. Download and run ClockGen (http://www.cpuid.org/clockgen.php) (CG-ICS950405).
13. Go to K8 FID/VID, set Multiplier Control to x 4.0 and Voltage Control to 0.800 V and click on Apply FID & Apply VID.
14. Go to the Control Panel->Display->Settings->Advanced->Advanced 3D->Clock Rate and Enable Clock Rate Change, set Core to 54.00 and Memory to 108.00 and click on Set.

I made a CD image of it using another computer with a floppy drive, but the Feature Tool is also on the Ultimate Boot CD and ready to be used :)
You can download Ultimate Boot CD from here:

I've been having a couple of small problems with my new Ferrari:
1.The trackpad left click will sometimes activate without my touching it...I'll just be moving the cursor around and it will click on its own.
This is because "tapping" is enabled in the Synaptics touchpad driver settings:
"Tapping" means quickly touching and then lifting your finger off the TouchPad surface. A light, quick tap works best. Very hard or slow taps are less effective. Tap once for a single click, or twice in rapid succession for a double-click.
You can disable this feature by going to the Control Panel->Mouse->Device Settings->Settings->Tapping and unchecking Enable Tapping.
2.After closing the lid and letting the machine "Sleep", and then returning and firing it back up, the screen is suddenly distorted...sometimes only on the windows log on/off screen, but also sometimes when I restart windows....I have to reboot the machine to get it back to normal.
This is a known bug with the Omega Drivers, but can be fixed by going to the Control Panel->Display->Settings->Advanced->POWERPLAY and unchecking Enable POWERPLAY.

I just recieved my Ferrari 3200 and it recognizes the processor as a 1.5ghz????? Whats up with that.. Also could someone like possibly post a good tweak guide here so you dont have to browse through 40 some pages in this thread?
I noticed that too, when I first received my Ferrari this past monday... I changed the power settings from 'portable/notebook' to 'always on' and it jumped up to 1.8 ghz.

Within the Feature Tool program it's called Advanced Power Mode (Alt-P), so make sure this is enabled. You can even adjust the drive's power consumption and acoustic level (Alt-A) with this tool :)

I'm not sure, but perhaps one of these overclocking tools will work on the Acer Ferrari 3000:
CPUMSR:
http://www.cpuheat.wz.cz/html/CPUMSR_main.htm
or
8rdavcore:
http://www.hasw.net/8rdavcore/
or
CrystalCPUID 4:

or
ClockGen (CG-RTM560266):
