hey, what are your ideas on knoppix?http://www.knoppix.com/
it lets you run an os from the cd rom drive so it could help to fix files in your windows folder when your computer is screwed up and windows doesnt work.

It looks like it's only for Linux though. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Ooooooh, I see what the point of that is. I was trying to understand the first post and now i finally get it. Much too late.
It is pretty interesting. I've had to use linux when my computer got all freaky when I installed litestep shell to replace explorer.

Knoppix is a wonderful idea. You can boot a full-fledged Linux with KDE3 desktop and many useful programs (about 2GB worth total) running completely off the CD. You can have a completely usable OS without a harddrive at all.
It autoconfigures all your hardware (video, monitor, sound, network, USB, etc.) with no intervention needed on your part. The load time is very nice.
Here's one of the biggest uses of it that I've come across:
Once it's up and running, it gives you an icon on your desktop for each hard drive partition it found and lets you browse the filesystems. I think it defaults to read-only mode, but all you have to do is right-click and select read-write mode. Get this: It will browse ext2, FAT16, FAT32, and NTFS (e.g., Windows 2000).
It's a great item to have in your toolkit.

wow, that would have been really handy about 2 days ago when my winxp installation got messed up, and mandrake told me that it wasn't able to resize the windows ntfs partition and it refused to install to my external drive. Anyways, this is def. a cd that will be in my bible of software.

I have also used Knoppix and it's a great tool. One use i found for it was for movies. About three or four movies i've downloaded off Kazaa (which i belive are in AVI format) will NOT run on any media player i could find for windows (Windows Media, DiVx Player, Real One, and about 5 others). But for one reason or another they run flawlessly through Knoppix. Only problem is that it might not detect some hardware since it has limited drivers (My NIC can't be detected).
Anyway if you want to use it just download the .ISO file and burn it to a CD, it's especially great if you have limited/no experience with a Linux type operating system.
