Working on a Dell Latitude C840, 1.8ghz Pentium M, 256mb PC2700 (upgrading to 512mb), 40gb hard drive, purchased at some kind of "emporium" or some such. The AC Adapter is model ADP-90FB, 90W, bios reads it as a 70W adapter, reports that the laptop should be using a 90W adapter (which it is) and that the computer won't run as it should, as such, and to press F1 to continue booting into battery saving mode (whatever). I've updated the bios which didn't change a thing.

Also, once up in Windows (XP Professional), System Properties reports the CPU correctly but claims it's running at 789mhz on AC. Adjusting the power options (Always On) makes no difference, disabling 'Smart CPU Mode' on AC, and setting 'CPU On AC' to Maximum Performance, in the bios, made no difference either.

Can these 2 issues be related? Other than this, the laptop runs just fine...:|

Thanks, -kd5-

I know I started another thread.. Sorry about that; it's just hard to grab people's attentions in other, longer threads.. and I am in a real hurry to buy a laptop.

I bought one a week ago (a Toshiba), and it didn't work out so well.. so returned it.. it was more issues with the keyboard, screen size, and the cpu was just too loud.. so I just want to be 100% sure about this laptop I'm most likely going to be buying.

I guess general comments about Acer and the processor is what I'm looking for.. or anything that you think will help in making a decision.

Side note: is there anything significant about the "Draft-N" in the WiFi?

Thank you!

I have an Acer Aspire 5630 and the USB ports do not go off when Windows is shutdown, hibernating or when it goes into slleep (standby) mode. They only go off when I disconnect the AC power. I just bought an external USB drive as my internal is almost full, but I don't want to have the external drive on 24/7. Disconnecting the drive is a bit inconvenient as I use the laptop with an external display and keyboard and keep the laptop itself hidden behind my desk. I updated the BIOS to Ver. 3.60, but I don't see settings in the BIOS for USB ports. Can these ports be turn off programatically. Do I need a special Acer Application or drivers to turn off the USB ports? I removed all the Acer Management bloatware that came with the laptop. Are there any jumpers inside the laptop that need to be changed? Any Suggestions?

Thanks in advance..

To sum up my needs as basically as possible, I am trying to find a 13-15 inch laptop that has put excellent design above all else - excellent ergonomics, chassis, keyboard etc - with HDMI and a great screen.

To go into more depth, i plan to use this laptop at home attached to a monitor (for dual screens) and a full size keyboard and mouse. So I want a laptop that combines consumer market features (HDMI, great screen, attractive body) with professional features (excellent ergonomics, chassis that does not flex, keyboard that does not flex, ability to easily connect to an additional monitor/keyboard/mouse), while still maintaining excellent design attributes throughout.

My last laptop was an IBM T42p and I loved it. At that time i was less interested in the consumer features and just wanted a rock solid laptop that had excellent design features and ergonomics.

Most manufactorers have been producing lack-luster products in my opinion. I walk through best buy and am turned off by every PC based laptop they they produce because, while they have all the consumer based features that I want, they couple it with horrible design and ergonomics.

When i look at business-oriented laptops, i usually see better design, but they lack the crisper looking screens, HDMI, and many of the best costs in the $2,000+ range...

The only laptop that really speaks to me is the 13 inch Macbook Pro. Compared to many of the business oriented laptops it actually seems like a good value at $1,200 to $1,400 and with its excellent design and beautiful screen (even though it lacks HDMI) it fits.

The Macbook Pro is an option, but I am a PC guy and love Windows 7... My perfect PC would look/feel like a Mac, have HDMI, and use Windows 7... Are there no PCs made for me??

I need a laptop for pretty simple casual everyday stuff...

I do NOT play games, watch movies, or use high performance req programs like photoshop.

I usually stick to browsing the internet; working on homework on it; MSN; listening to music, etc. Fairly simple stuff.. usually have 3 windows open at the most. I use my laptop a lot though, but keep it casual.

I understand how much RAM I need and all that, but can you please recommend a processor? What will be sufficient for my uses?

I'm specifically looking at laptops that are AMD Athlon 64 Processor, AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core, and Intel Core 2 Duo (is that too much though?)

Here are some examples of laptops I am looking at:
http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/prodde...61&catid=28239

http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/prodde...69&catid=28239

http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/prodde...43&catid=28239

http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/prodde...60&catid=26955 (this one is $750; really the price is $850 in the store!)

Please help with advice.. I don't know if the last one is too much, or the other one's are too weak for my uses. I'm a student with a limited budget, so really thinking about the costs.. which is the reason that I have picked out these laptops as possible buys.

Please note that the last Intel 2 Core Duo I can get for $750 instead of $850 (the actual store price).. is it worth it getting it then? Is it that much better than the AMDs that a couple hundred dollars shouldn't matter?

Thanks in advance.

If someone could crack theirs own, and obtain the identification information on the tops of these that would be amazing! Obviously, I can't because two (Blue and White) and of the tops are irreparably damaged, and the third (Red) is mildly obscured making the identification information ambiguous. I could probably work on the red one for longer and get it, so the real priorities are the blue and white ones.

Note on picture: It is from pre-exploding, but I assure you, they have definitely seen better days.

This is very much appreciated!
"It's no secret that many tests show Internet Explorer is much slower in loading pages, particularly those that use javascript. However, it was still surprising to see the firm's Steven Sinofsky openly admit that gap, with his presentation even noting one test which showed Internet Explorer achieving just 50% of the speed of some rivals"

"..it appears clear that Internet Explorer 9 will do a better job of meeting standards than its predecessor. On one ranking which scores browsers out of 100 on a range of standards, IE9 received a 32, compared with just 24 for IE8. However, that's far short of the main challenger to Internet Explorer, Mozilla's Firefox, which scored a 92 in its latest beta edition."
I have a short quesion, I have had my Acer since new (about 2 years), not having any problems with it whatsoever, until recently, when it decided that upon displaying dark (black, grey etc) background it will intermittently flash white vertical lines across the screen.

Since it is out of warranty I have had it looked up by a repair company, which have said it was the screen connection cables that were at fault. That helped the problem for about a month, after which it reappered.

I have repeated the process then - the company replaced the connections, but this time it didn't help at all.

As this is happeneing randomly I am now asking, what could be the casue of such a fault,, if anyone has any idea. If there are any questions I will respond to the best of my knowledge.

I have made a short video that shows exactly what happens
Cheers for any help.
