I have an Acer Aspire 5630 and the USB ports do not go off when Windows is shutdown, hibernating or when it goes into slleep (standby) mode. They only go off when I disconnect the AC power. I just bought an external USB drive as my internal is almost full, but I don't want to have the external drive on 24/7. Disconnecting the drive is a bit inconvenient as I use the laptop with an external display and keyboard and keep the laptop itself hidden behind my desk. I updated the BIOS to Ver. 3.60, but I don't see settings in the BIOS for USB ports. Can these ports be turn off programatically. Do I need a special Acer Application or drivers to turn off the USB ports? I removed all the Acer Management bloatware that came with the laptop. Are there any jumpers inside the laptop that need to be changed? Any Suggestions?

Thanks in advance..

If someone could crack theirs own, and obtain the identification information on the tops of these that would be amazing! Obviously, I can't because two (Blue and White) and of the tops are irreparably damaged, and the third (Red) is mildly obscured making the identification information ambiguous. I could probably work on the red one for longer and get it, so the real priorities are the blue and white ones.

Note on picture: It is from pre-exploding, but I assure you, they have definitely seen better days.

This is very much appreciated!

Hiya,

I have a short quesion, I have had my Acer since new (about 2 years), not having any problems with it whatsoever, until recently, when it decided that upon displaying dark (black, grey etc) background it will intermittently flash white vertical lines across the screen.

Since it is out of warranty I have had it looked up by a repair company, which have said it was the screen connection cables that were at fault. That helped the problem for about a month, after which it reappered.

I have repeated the process then - the company replaced the connections, but this time it didn't help at all.

As this is happeneing randomly I am now asking, what could be the casue of such a fault,, if anyone has any idea. If there are any questions I will respond to the best of my knowledge.

I have made a short video that shows exactly what happens
http://cyberx2002.co.uk/VIDEO0002.mp4
Cheers for any help.

is there any way that i can restore the partition with this data on it so that i can restore the computer to factory settings using the ALT+F10 method? having reformatted it using a windows CD, tons of the hardware drivers are missing etc so I regret that i didn't remember that acer had the built in restore...

The ACER has the full 16:9 view. Is there something the graphics cards is doing to make this happen? Is there anything I can adjust?
BTW the old gateway is xp and the new acer is 7.
It was easy to get rid of the Acer games--most of those are trial versions anyway.

But what about these?

Acer Arcade Deluxe - Acer games have been deleted, keep the arcade for videos, music, pictures, or let WMP, Media Center handle these?

MS Office - trialware At some point I may buy MS Office. Do I need these as placeholders?
Activation Assistant
Excel 2007
One Note 2007
PowerPoint 2007
Word 2007 - haven't used, but have some old Word docs may need to open. M$ replaced Word with "Works Word Processor" in MS Works.

MS Office Live Add-in
Office Live Add-in help
Office Live Add-in workplace

Windows Defender - replaced by MSE--still needed?

Vista "My Stationary" - have one letterhead template created from MS Works. rest probably won't get used.

NTI Backup Now 5 - think these two were freebies from Acer "partners" for registering, and solicit you to buy the "full" version
NTI Media Maker 8

Software Informer - must've downloaded this, but don't know if it's reliable, and if it's a good idea to let third-party software update by itself.

EarthLink TotalAccess - must've been a reason this wasn't deleted before, but I can't remember what it is!

MediaRECOVER Lite - another Acer partner freebie in crippled form with prompts to "upgrade"

MS Office 2003 PowerPoint Viewer - will this even work if PowerPoint 2007 trialware is deleted?

Personal Photo Manager Deluxe - think this is another Acer partners freebie. Redundant with a couple of MS photo organizers and Picasa. Keep anyway?

Very annoying. I tried tweaking ALL the power settings but still it will go to sleep for no reason. Hibernation on this laptop is erratic. I emailed Acer about this and still waiting for a reply. Bummer!
I also have a compaq cq40 with almost thesame specs with the Acer Ferrari One. turion x2, ati 780g chipset. My Compaq running win7 64bit Ultimate RC does not have hibernating issues. This really baffles me. Is this a windows 7 bug? or am I having hardware issues? Any help is highly appreciated. tnx
