I know I started another thread.. Sorry about that; it's just hard to grab people's attentions in other, longer threads.. and I am in a real hurry to buy a laptop.

I bought one a week ago (a Toshiba), and it didn't work out so well.. so returned it.. it was more issues with the keyboard, screen size, and the cpu was just too loud.. so I just want to be 100% sure about this laptop I'm most likely going to be buying.

I guess general comments about Acer and the processor is what I'm looking for.. or anything that you think will help in making a decision.

Side note: is there anything significant about the "Draft-N" in the WiFi?

Thank you!

To sum up my needs as basically as possible, I am trying to find a 13-15 inch laptop that has put excellent design above all else - excellent ergonomics, chassis, keyboard etc - with HDMI and a great screen.

To go into more depth, i plan to use this laptop at home attached to a monitor (for dual screens) and a full size keyboard and mouse. So I want a laptop that combines consumer market features (HDMI, great screen, attractive body) with professional features (excellent ergonomics, chassis that does not flex, keyboard that does not flex, ability to easily connect to an additional monitor/keyboard/mouse), while still maintaining excellent design attributes throughout.

My last laptop was an IBM T42p and I loved it. At that time i was less interested in the consumer features and just wanted a rock solid laptop that had excellent design features and ergonomics.

Most manufactorers have been producing lack-luster products in my opinion. I walk through best buy and am turned off by every PC based laptop they they produce because, while they have all the consumer based features that I want, they couple it with horrible design and ergonomics.

When i look at business-oriented laptops, i usually see better design, but they lack the crisper looking screens, HDMI, and many of the best costs in the $2,000+ range...

The only laptop that really speaks to me is the 13 inch Macbook Pro. Compared to many of the business oriented laptops it actually seems like a good value at $1,200 to $1,400 and with its excellent design and beautiful screen (even though it lacks HDMI) it fits.

The Macbook Pro is an option, but I am a PC guy and love Windows 7... My perfect PC would look/feel like a Mac, have HDMI, and use Windows 7... Are there no PCs made for me??

I need a laptop for pretty simple casual everyday stuff...

I do NOT play games, watch movies, or use high performance req programs like photoshop.

I usually stick to browsing the internet; working on homework on it; MSN; listening to music, etc. Fairly simple stuff.. usually have 3 windows open at the most. I use my laptop a lot though, but keep it casual.

I understand how much RAM I need and all that, but can you please recommend a processor? What will be sufficient for my uses?

I'm specifically looking at laptops that are AMD Athlon 64 Processor, AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core, and Intel Core 2 Duo (is that too much though?)

Here are some examples of laptops I am looking at:
http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/prodde...61&catid=28239

http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/prodde...69&catid=28239

http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/prodde...43&catid=28239

http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/prodde...60&catid=26955 (this one is $750; really the price is $850 in the store!)

Please help with advice.. I don't know if the last one is too much, or the other one's are too weak for my uses. I'm a student with a limited budget, so really thinking about the costs.. which is the reason that I have picked out these laptops as possible buys.

Please note that the last Intel 2 Core Duo I can get for $750 instead of $850 (the actual store price).. is it worth it getting it then? Is it that much better than the AMDs that a couple hundred dollars shouldn't matter?

Thanks in advance.

Hello, i'm getting a new laptop for christmas. I've narrowed it down to two laptops. I'm a sophomore now and would like it to last atleast a year or two into my college career, though i don't plan on gaming on it for that long. As far as gaming goes, i don't need the highest end products or anything of that nature, and i won't be playing crazy graphic intensive games at the highest settings. i just wanna be able to play simple FPS shooters like combat arms, CoD(not exactly sure which one i wanna get, probably modern warfare 1), Team Fortress 2, CS: Source, and maybe some other games of that nature. Again, i don't need perfect high def graphics, just smooth gaming that still looks good. Now, onto the laptops:

First i've found a nice deal on a refurbished gateway p-7805u. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...#ht_3071wt_939

next, i've also found a nice deal on a refurbished asus G51vx-RX05. http://cgi.ebay.com/Asus-G51VX-RX05-...ht_3236wt_1069

and i WILL be using BING CASHBACK on either of these, and yes, they do both apply.
okay, to the comparison.

I really like the big screen for gaming on the gateway, and also the higher res, but i know that big laptop might be a hassle when i move away from gaming(laptop portability isnt that big of a deal now, but later it will be). the gateway is pretty heavy, at like 9 pounds, while im pretty sure the asus comes out at like 7.3. I like the looks of the gateway a good bit more than the asus, but looks can be brushed aside for now. the gateway has faster ram, faster processor, and better overall specs, apart from the graphics card. the asus beats the gateway out with the nvidia gtx 260m, while the gateway has the nvidia geforce 9800m GTS. i understand that the 260m is better, but how much better. for the type of gaming that i'm gonna be doing, will it really be all that noticeable? i don't plan on playing chrysis or anything... let's see... i like the keyboard on the asus more than i do the gateway, as it looks to be more sturdy, and it also lights up :D. that gateway comes with a 3 year extended warranty(with a company called CPS, and i realize that this might not be a huge and reputable company, but i've read a few reviews and they seem to be a decent company. and 3 years with a bad company is better than 0 years with a good company), while the asus just comes with the standard 90day warranty. i trust the seller of the asus more than i do the gateway, but i won't let that hold me back from buying from either. i like the price of the asus (after cashback) which comes out to like $736, while the gateway comes out to like $772 or something. i also won't let that small price sway my decision. i've also heard that the asus has some overheating problems? keep in mind i'm not afraid to open the thing up and do some modifications to aid the cooling process..

sorry for the wall of text, but i need advice.

-15" inch or more display. We use skype and do a bit of international webcamming (if that is a word). 17" WXGA+ or better is massive plus. We watch movies on it, netflix downloads, etc...so that screen helps. I'm mostly working on my online business and playing poker all day long so screen clarity superseeds everything pretty much.
- Scanning pictures
- Photoshop work

That's about it. my budget does not dictate I ask for extended battery life, which is a plus once again.

I was looking at the $400 Lenovo at Newegg and something like that at Tigerdirect so far. Looking at the promos at BestBuy too.

aloha folks,
Even my Gateway 500 GB desktop reports 466 GB total. What gives? Any ideas?

Hi,
My Toshiba laptop (Win XP) of 3.25 years just died (screen problem) and I need to buy a new one asap (I have a paper due next wednesday).

I'm not computer illiterate, but when it comes to buying laptops, I'm confused on a few issues.

I want something in the price range $500-$700ish. I use my laptop a lot, but am considered a "casual" user - i.e. I don't really play games and don't watch movies on it. At most, I usually have 3 programs open - MSN Messenger and Firefox usually.

So my questions:
1) Does the laptop brand really matter? In the end, they're probably all the same right (esp. if they are in the same price range)

2) The CPU is the thing bugging me the most. Which processor do I go for? Based on my limited needs, is it really necessary to go for something as a Core 2 Duo? What does the CPU actually do? Battery life is one thing, but when it comes to "performance", what does that actually mean?

3) I've seen a few things that say I should mostly focus on the RAM content.. I'm guessing Win7 requires a lot more RAM to run than an XP... right?

Thanks in advance (even if you have something short and basic to say, say it please! Anything will help me I'm sure!)

First of all, i'm a big fan of Sager, as a previous owner, and mine lasted a long time before dying on me. Time for a new upgrade and looking at Sager NP 8690 or NP8760, both with Intel® Core™ i7-820QM Processor.

I'm looking at 250gb SATA (7200 RPM), 4gb RAM, Graphic Card with 1gb Video Memory and sticking with default configurations for rest. Operating system will be Windows 7 Home Premium.

I don't play Video Games and use the laptop strictly for CG, Photoshop and CAD.

I tested this configuration against HP's Pavilion dv6t and dv7t and Dell's XPS 16 and Studio 17. Other than the better Graphic Card in Sager (Nvidia GeForce GTX 280M) as opposed to HP (Nvidia GeForce GTX 230M) or Dell (ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650), virtually no difference. In HP's case i actually get free upgrade to 500gb Hard Drive. I would expect Sager to give me a better Graphic Card for the same price or lower

Final pricing after instant rebates and offers, Dell and HP are always cheaper than Sager by $200-400, which doesnt make sense. First time around i bought Sager because it offered more bang for the buck and i overlooked customer service or world-wide service networks that come with Brand Names. Because i used to live in Los Angeles then, and i could drive upto Sager Warehouse anytime i needed to get things fixed or replaced. But this time around, i will be living in India/Australia, where there is good HP/Dell network.

So am i missing something? Sager is not a good value anymore?

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers and sorry for the long post.

Ok, so I've been looking at getting a new laptop. I currently own an Alienware M5550, which is about 3 years old. I'm actually not looking for a gaming laptop this time around, as I very rarely play them on my laptop anymore. I'm on the hunt for a good all around lappy. Something with a decent battery life (2+ hours), 14-15" screen. The processor needs to be able to handle simple things like word and excel. It will mostly be a "paper work" laptop, if you can catch my meaning. The only reason I'm asking for help is because I have a tendency to want to upgrade anything possible to the best and wind up with a laptop over $1000 easy. I'm trying to keep it between $500 and $750. I know most of you are probably going to say that my current laptop can handle all of that, and you are right, but I want to upgrade to newer hardware and downgrade the weight. It needs to be more realistically portable. My biggest concern, never having truly worked on Windows 7 yet, is the memory requirements. I know it will "run" with 1 gig, but for the best performance what would you recommend? If you have any questions, feel free to ask me at any time. Thanks ahead of time.
