I decided to take the plunge and install Window 7 Ultimate on my old reliable Area 51 m5500 running Vista, but I'm having issues with the Nvidia 6600 drivers for Win 7 that I have found. When I install the Nvidia 6600 drivers from the Windows update site or the ones bundled in the NBF MobileForce drivers package Se7en I version 190.38 I get a black screen soon after the laptop boots up. I'm able to see the Windows 7 is starting logo soon after it boots, but instead of getting the logon screen after the startup process ends... I get a black screen. The display works fine when I flip the switch to use the Intel graphics hardware and reboot... but I really need the Nvidia enhanced graphics performance. I was trying to find and install the old Nvidia drivers that I used under Vista, but I installed those so long so ago that I forgot where I got them.

The sound drivers that were installed during the Window 7 install process don't work either. Under Device Manager-> Sound and Video I can see a High Definition Audio Device and a Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device. I think the drivers that used to be installed were for a Realtek Audio device. I have unistalled the drivers and reboot it, but Windows 7 insists on installing the above mentioned drivers that don't work.

I'd appreciate any suggestions on what to try to fix these problems... Thanks.

I've got the 7600 Nvidia graphics card and have been using the DVI port for a dual monitor setup with my Laptop monitor.

Recently Red is gone from the DVI port to the external monitor. I use a DVI to VGA adapter to connect to the monitor. Initially it would randomly flicker off then back on. Now red is just gone from the DVI out.. The laptop monitor has never had this problem. It is only present on an external monitor. I have never been able to move the cable or adapters to recreate/fix the problem...

When it first started happening, if I clicked around on the external monitor or moved windows around, the red would come back.... Now red is gone for good...

What I've tried (not necessarily in this order):

Different monitor,

Different VGA cable,

DVI to VGA cable (eliminate the adapter from the equation)

Checking for broken/bent pins

Wiggling the physical interfaces to try and get the red to flicker on and off, unsuccessful.

Opened the case to reattach all internal connections related to the external video port.

Reinstalled all the drivers.

I'm getting ready to do a clean install of windows 7 so that is my last hope for a software/OS fix....

So I've got the part number of the DVI port

80GCP5300-B0

And I've found a place (overseas) that I can order it from on line.

What do you guys think the problem is? I'm thinking it's a hardware problem as it progressively got worse...

Any ideas or thoughts would be great.

Thanks a ton! :headbang:

I got my M7700 in the summer of 2006 and never had any real problems with the video or display at all until recently. i was having wireless problems which i solved by respawning, but once my system was set back to the factory image some strange things started happening. Number 1: when i open some windows, especially MS Windows apps these pink, cyan, or yellow rows of pixels wil randomly show up around thumbnails and images. Number 2: when i start up a game, especially neverwinter nights, the video goes bat-shit crazy, all the surfaces start flickering, there is a visible line down the center of the screen and the colors on every character are pulled from that line to the characters's position, and lighting effects will freak out. Number 3: also in NWN these random rows and columns of rectangular boxes about 10 pixels wide and 5 pixels high appear in groups all over the screen and the menu GUI tweaks out.

These are the ways i tried to fix this that didn't work: updating windows and my Nvidia 6800 go drivers, putting my GPU in the oven, cleaning out all of the fans and internal components and reapplying thermal goo to the GPU, rolling back to earlier versions of my video drivers...can't think of what else. Anyways, the newer drivers only create more problems with the right click freezing the computer and making the screen flash to black for a few seconds before returning to normal.

Sorry for all the description but i am at my wit's and weekend's end, so any ideas?

Thanks anyone.

Ok I inherited a m9750 from a client who didnt want to pay to get it repaired. Most of the time when you turn it on, all the lights on the case come on but NOTHING on the screen, no bios etc. I can hear windows start but again, nothing on the screen. Occasionally it will boot like normal. When it went into windows the first time after the problem I noticed the time was reset. I replaced the motherboard cmos battery . Same problem started after a short time. I reinstalled windows, tested the memory, which came out w/o errors. Same problem.
I also tried to output the video to a monitor when it was in windows but nothing on screen, (I know I was in windows cause I can hear it), nothing happened. It will output to a monitor when I get in to windows normally.

It seems to work normally more often I fool around with the main laptop battery. (take it out put it in) try AC only etc. This however may be a coincidence. Anyone experience this?
Thanks for any input.
