I'm working on a Gateway W340-UI notebook. The panel is displaying images - you can see them when you shine a flashlight on the panel. I've removed the panel and plugged the backlight bulb into another computer's inverter and it will light up. I've replaced the inverter in the W340 but it still will not go.

Does anyone know what signal information should be on the input to the inverter that I might be able to see with a scope? I'm thinking there's something on the motherboard that's messed up or do the signals to the inverter come from the panel itself?

I have no idea what I'm looking for. Perhaps a new computer. :)

thanks for your comments and advice.

Bought an LT3103 from Best Buy 6 weeks ago. On a few occasions when I've tried to turn it on the switch button light comes on but nothing happens, no drive whirring, no boot, etc. Seems to be doing it more and more. Second, when it goes to sleep (orange lite on switch) it's unwakeable. Have to hold switch down to power off and then reboot (and usually then have to shut it down and try again because of problem #1). Anyone else experiencing anything like these or did I just get single case lemon that I need to swap out?

Thirdly, it often becomes non-responsive. This seems to be mostly when I've got 2 or more apps running, like maybe a couple of Firefox windows and a Word window or two. Is this machine just this anemic or should it be able to handle this? Win 7 possibly help?

Thanks,

The sound icon in system tray says "No Audio Output Device is Installed"...I check device manager and there is no "Sound, Video, and Game Controller" section. Also there are no problem devices listed. I downloaded and attempted to install the audio driver from the Gateway support site. The setup fails with the message "device object not present".

I do not know if the audio worked before because it was not bootable when I received it.

How can I get the audio to work. Thanks in advance

I've had this problem for years, since I bought this computer new. It has never run on battery power, even out of the box. I should have sent it back but was too impatient and figured there must be a solution. If the computer becomes unplugged while on, the screen goes black and it becomes unresponsive. The same happens if it is booted without being plugged in. If booted on battery power, it will indeed begin the booting process and load right up until the point that the desktop should appear, at which time the screen remains black. Rather than totally shutting off, the hardware and fan will still be powered on and evidently running during these situations. It will not go into standby by pushing the power button and cannot be brought back to life in any way, even if AC power is reintroduced, unless rebooted. The only way to turn it off is to hold the power button down for several seconds until it shuts down and then it can be restarted. I have run the Battery Learning Software twice and it has made no difference. There is a test button on the battery itself which indicates that it is fully charged. The light in the front of the computer indicates that the battery is fully charged (blue light rather than pink). Battery gauging software has also indicated that the battery has a 100% charge. Battery is properly seated in the laptop. Please advise on any possible method of repairing this problem. It's getting irritating after all these years. Every time the plug gets disconnected, even for a moment, you have to reboot and you lose all your unsaved info! Thanks for your time.

My problem is that the laptop will not boot or anything. There would be time where i would go press the power button and the dvd drive would make noise as if it checks for a cd and usually then the hard drive light comes on and the computer boots. But there were some times just the dvd drive noise happens but drive light doesnt come on nothing on the screen comes on but after a few seconds the cpu fan turns on. And thats what its at now so i decided to open it up and boy were the HS vents were clogged.so i cleaned the fan and heat sink vents with some compressed air. and all clean and tidy but its still not booting. My best guess is that after many failed boots and the overheating the cpu might have burned out? Ive tried reseating the ram, taking the power plug off and battery out and holding power button down for 30 secs then putting the battery back in and plug and still the same result.hopefully someone can help me solve this. Anyone with any thoughts, suggestions? Thanks in advance. btw cpu is an amd turion tl-58 the laptop on the bottom says model w350a i know its a t series just not sure which one. could be t 1616 but not sure at all.

The diagnosis:

Charge deteriorating daily - "full charge" from 100 % to 60 % over the last 2 weeks . Windows & BIOS both recognize fact that battery is going up to 60 % capacity but can't charge the battery past that point, computer on or off. Indicator used to switch blue when at full charge. It will never switch to blue now, it ALWAYS indicates that it is charging.

The facts / history:

Self-caused problems: Broke power supply cord while attempting to charge by jamming it into express printer "nub" port while not looking

Bought a cheap power supply on ebay for replacement, they sent the wrong one. Was a 60W and needed a 65W, attempted to use it without looking at the fine print on the power brick. Comptuer worked for 10 minutes then shut down. Problems started happening since then.

I bought the OEM power cord from the authorized dealer to attempt to resolve the problem.

I tried the auto-battery learning utility - which recognizes the fact that it is not fully charged but left overnight will not go past that inhibited value (now at 60 %)

Atttempted BIOS flash - even though it wasn't an upgrade.

Pulled CMOS battery

Concern:

So is it the motherboard or the battery? I would hate to spend the $110 dollars on the battery to learn that it is the motherboard. My warranty will be covered if it is the motherboard, but if it turns out to be the battery and I sent it in, nothing will be covered and I will have wasted about $250 bucks in shipping and diagnostic fees. What does every one think, and have they seen this before?
