A few quick things. . . Do you have the latest firmware for the router? Are your wireless drivers up to date? Try disabling any WEP or WPA and see if that fives you the full 15 Mbps.

I wouldn't do it. My sister-in-law has a 1720 and its a POS. You can get a loaded Precision 6300 for $2500. You can save money and buy extra RAM & bigger HD online.
