Discovered that it doesn't seem to happen on mine if I go into standby, only if switching back on from a complete shutdown, and then only intermittently and usually when it has been left for a few hours or more.

You can rule out third party RAM, as I have 1 Gb of Dell RAM. I'm going to try reseating a few things today to see if it helps any. As I say, problem is that it's intermittent - so just when you think you've nailed it, it shows up again

If your drive is a Hitachi you can download the 'Feature Tool' from here: http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm and use it (must boot from DOS) to turn down power-saving and turn up performance.
msauper: did you try reseating the memory chips yourself? It'd be cool if you could 'fix it' before the tech showed up
