what driver/firmware and Kernel version are you running? Is your kernel logging any informational errors? And you are saying your card connects the the AP but dhcp wont get an IP/DNS etc. -- Shawn
to get rid of that annoyiing msg you need to add your hostname to the loopback in /etc/hosts 127.0.0.1 $HOSTNAME localhost

Im a lucky nvidia guy but Ill help if i can. You will need to post your /var/log/Xorg.log file after trying to run with fgrlx. I would also suggest dropping gdm and boot to console until this is fixed. Its so much easier to troubleshoot...
