Have you tried switching the option to use the internal agpgart? (Using the internal one if you're not at the moment, or vice versa) What version of the ati drivers are you using?

try running "startx -- -logverbose 8" and check the last few lines in the log that are written before the thing freezes. Maybe it's hanging when it's trying to initialize a certain part of DRI or something.

Yes, if it's the secondary slave, then that should be right. You can just use tab completion on the grub command line to check if the drive has the right partition table (i.e. is the right drive).
