Had this same issue twice with my M7700. Both times was a replacement motherboard - something to do with the video card contact area perishing. They'll get to the point where they won't even boot with the pressure applied.

On the 7700 they use thermal pads though right? As I said, I've never tampered with that.. surely the pad they would use would cover it?

Yep the laptop cooler is the Zalman one, it blows up into the bottom.. I have it sitting off the desk slightly, and a small fan blowing up into the intake for the cooler (not into the back of the laptop.) Re the heatsink - never taken...
