How about the connector for the hard drive being loose? I couldn't tell if you had shipped it in to be worked on but if so and it was working before, and isn't now, then I'd check the connectors. Granted it could be a bad hard drive but...

If it's the choice of not being able to turn it off or not having it then I choose not having it thus a 'No'. If it was able to be controlled for brightness and on/off then I'd change that to a Yes in a heartbeat.
