Get an eMachines 6809. It's about the same price and has real power and tons of great features.
DDR2 is only one thing among many to wait for. Besides, a 5% increase in performance is worthy IMO. Isn't DDR compatible in DDR2 slots anyway? There will also be the easily upgradable GPU's from NVidia and probably an answer from ATI....
The PM line is going desktop soon enough in more powerful 64 bit configurations. I wouldn't be surprised to see boards for up to 8 of these coming processors running in parallel. There will also be quite a few drastic changes in memory...

AFAIK it was delayed yet another 2 weeks yesterday.
