Better cpu mid end video card, also there really isnt any point to upgrade a mid end machine as they are cheap and performance gap from now to whenever you need a new laptop will be huge
Have you looked into hp? Their laptops seem to suit college kids better or at least they are cheap yet they offer pretty good hardware. Also if im guessing correctly you might want to get a dedicated video card so during your down time...
I dont think the processor would make any impact on your dvd playback quality since they are dual core processors but i dont have any solid evidence, also it will be wise to get a dedicated video card.
