I doubt they have any 6800's left. Do you have a warranty on your system? At this point I would think they would have to replace it, unless they have some refurbished 6800's lying around.
I agree If its artifacting at the splash screen your gpu is fried.
I haven't heard of many issues with engineering samples either. In fact, I've seen many people searching for them b/c of the unlocked multipliers. I don't know about heat issues, I wouldn't think you would have a problem with that; ...
m94mni is right. You cannot upgrade just the socket, it is integral to the motherboard. You can still upgrade the processor so long as you use a socket m processor.
