Sounds like your gpu is fried to me. Especially since your seeing green lines on an external monitor as well. If it was the motherboard, I don't think the laptop would boot even in safe mode.
pc2-4200 is the fastest ram your computer can take advantage of. The front side bus runs at 533 mhz so if you buy the pc2-5300 the computer will still run it at 533. So either will work in the system.
both vista and xp 64 bit can handle 4gb. Unfortunately on that model laptop the limiting factor is the chipset. The laptop will not even recognize all 4gb in the bios.
