I got my remote from a local electronics shop for around $50 CDN. It also works under linux.
I've got a remote that was an ATI/MSI branding. In reality it is an X10 mouse remote. It doesn't work off of the IR port, it has a USB dongle that connects, and the remote uses RF to communicate (Doesn't have to be line of sight).
It took the onsite technician about an hour to dissassemble and reassemble my machine. (and took me about the same amount of time on the phone with tech support to convince them to replace the board)
