No, they have nothing to do with the external display, only the LCD. The only thing I can figure is possibly some kind of GPU problem that for some reason is not detected at POST.

Is that including on an external monitor? It really sounds like either the backlight itself, the inverter cable (common problem on that machine), or the actual inverter. Typical, if the GPU actually fails, the machine shouldn't boot up....

I can't speak from experience, but if it is utilizing shrink, then technically yes, it probably is (although perhaps unnoticeable). Compressing the video is one of the ways shrink gets the size down (and of course stripping features out).
An external solution should work, but if the on board sound chip is screwed, you won't be able to use the internal speakers.

That is an "E" core, mandating the need for the modified BIOS, but I see it was still a no go even with the revision. Just for kicks and giggles, you may want to try the 0f08.p01e. I doubt it will work if the 02 didn't, but...
