yea verizon lets you use the standard 14.4 data connection that will only use up minutes and some have even got signed up for the express plan 128k so that it only uses minutes... I have yet to actually try that myself though.
what OS is installed on the comp? According to the spec sheet on HP's site that perticular model has standard Integrated/AC97 Audio... WinXP usually installs drivers for that automatically. Otherwise take a look at driverguide.com
