Sounds like a loose Hard Drive Cable. I would take the Hard Drives out and put them back in. But only do that if you comfortable doing that because it can be a pain pulling the ribbons out. Otherwise it is most likely a Mother Board...
Fixed sound problem by removing the modem. Luckily the modem is removeable. Since this is fixed, this thread can be closed.
It was actually wcbryant that found out the solution but I was close.
I can confirm that removing the modem works. I had to reinstall the drivers then on reboot it worked. I also have a Realtek Control Panel in the System Tray. I can't believe all the crap I went through getting the sound to work and I was...

Yes with Vista (and every Linux distro made since 2006), but I don't want to take it apart so was hoping maybe it was close to being under the Keyboard. I will just stick with XP as the life cycle of this laptop could be reaching the end.

What is the tablet you're trying to use ? I have no problem and have not heard of anyone with a 9860 having problems with firewire.
