Dell systems are really good about being able to revert. My 14" Sony I sold would literally lock the cd drive out if XP was installed. Put vista back on and it works fine.

You may have had a bearing or gear go out on you. You should have no problem burning over and over as long as you are gentle putting disks in or out. Bottom line, the drive is most likely shot. Those kind of noises are bad.
