You can not use FB and ATI driver together they fight over the 128mb that the driver only sees. Meaning if you use the bootsplash your killing you ATI driver.
Best way to install Gentoo is stage 3 with Knoppix. I have my 8790 running everything except the camera. Awaiting driver for it. Everything else works even the latest driver for the Ultra controller works well. I have a few games running...

Just did a 24hr Lan Party on Saturday, took the 8790 and from start to finish ran fans full blast. It also was warm in there, the air wasn't working properly.
You may have some issues with some games, not sure why. EA's Nascar Thunder 2004 would not run with the Omega 4.5 equiv drivers. Went Back to Sager provided drivers everything worked. Just not sure why.
