Yep use Evolution for your email outlook users will find it's a close one. Also on anti-virus you can run clamd or avast which can both be run as crons to update and setup to filter email and files on the fly with no user intervention....
Gentoo is really not that hard. Debian will work too, it's where Gentoo hails from. So far Gentoo has given me little issue.
I'm not using the raid portion at this time, couldn't justify it. It works with raid but you need to make a change to the promise controller module. Once you make that change you should have no issues...

This happens from time to time with my 8790 too. I run Linux on it. So it appears to be a firmware issue. Possible ACPI. I have tried everything and sometimes it does it sometimes it don't.
Gentoo went on mine with no problems, have everything installed except the camera, no driver for it yet.,
