This is what I have done. Buy an USB external hard drive enclosure. Size 2.5.. Connect the hard drive with the data you want, and look for your files. You should see the files. PM for more details if you need it.
It will work but there will not be a great difference in speed. Yes it is faster ,but its not worth the upgrade (IMO). Consider the work to make that happen. You have to tear down the laptop then install the proc. and then rebuild it. and hopefully you don't damage anything in the process. I have 9yrs exp w/laptops. Trust me..
I had the same problem when I went from Vista back to XP The sound drivers on Hp's site do not work for XP. Lucky for me and you I had the recovery disk from and XP ver. Drivers in there worked for me. PM me and I'll find a way to get them to you.

You should be able to buy the recovery disk from HP. Thats your best bet.
