Rachel did you get this fixed? It sounds like a hardware fault. I too have a similar issue on a TM6292 where the CD/DVD is no longer visible within My Computer or Device Manager and no end of tweaking has bought it back.

It turned out to be the touchpad was disabled in the control panel mouse setting. I only discovered this after remotely assisting the user via the internet. Thanks to all that helped.
