I think you can try FN+Power Button, which I think runs diagnostics. If those checkout fine, I'd reformat. If that doesnt solve it, i'd try calling up dell lol... just don't mention the part about overclock :P

When you get the 1710, take apart the 1720, put the 2gb ram in there, the HD, the eve burner, everything thats better and return the 1720. Easy as pie.

Also, make sure you spread it evenly across the top. Not just drop a bead and leave it there. I usually use a guitar pick to spread the stuff to make sure it's a even coating.
Basically since we're all pretty hardcore notebook forumers, we'd usually recommend according to upgradability, and best performance, so the motherboard should have that dedicated video card slot. But yeah, it's up to you in the end. :P
