do you mean a DVD-ROM/CD-RW? As far as I know that has always been an option, the standard one, maybe certain resellers don't offer it so that they can sell you the more expensive DVD+/-RW. Personally I think it will make the laptop last...

I think there was an issue with the new prescott processors and SP2, that SP2 wouldn't boot if the processor was present, and microsoft fixed it with an update. Don't ask me how you can update your windows if you can't boot into it, but...
