What about heat dissipation with the cover closed, mine gets hotter if it's on with the cover closed than if it's open...

You wouldn't happen to be using Memorex CD's would you? I have this problem with any Memorex media on this drive, but it burns fine on my 2500a (I think it's a 2500 anyway, can't check now) in my desktop. They also burn fine in my TDK...
