look at the averatec 3xxx series.which are very portable and sub 1000 and should be okay for what you intend to do. Dell 600m or their latitude series are also very portable but may be more than 1000 bucks.

Notebook RAM is NOT the same as Desktop RAM. you have to check for the 200 pin SODIMMS. Check out the manual of ya laptop or the acer website to see the fastest memory compatible. I think you can go for PC2700(DDR333) or PC3200(DDR400)...

I have a similar situation. I have an old pavilion desktop which recommends PC100 SDRAM. but i found out that PC133 is much cheaper. but donno if I can take that chance as the system is an old one and we are dealing with SDRAM.

No you dont have to remove anything. normally the battery will be charged once you plug in, Unless your battery is already charged. Mine has a green LED blinking when its charging and solid green LED when its fully charged.
