My palmrest is definitely faded. You can actually feel a depression in some parts, the surface is worn away so much. Latex gloves don't breathe, your sweat will accumulate and pickle your skin. Not pleasant.

Boot speeds will still be slow since the base data transfer rate will be slow. The fastest 8GB CF card I see out there is Transcend at around 20MB/sec read/write. Still it's an interesting idea. Personally I wouldn't do it for just 8GB....

I think in Windows you should be OK since most programs must use device drivers now, and cannot write directly to device control registers. So it will mainly depend on the USB adapter's driver software.
