Samsung by far, stick a 2Gb stick of RAM (Team and Crucial both work) in and you have a fast little netbook... Dropped in price recently too.. I wouldn't even look at HP or Lenovo for netbooks... Order would be Samsung, ASUS eeepc, LG...
ASUS always put an ACPI patch in for their motherboards esp for Vista.. I notice the same with their laptops - I would link, but the ASUS download site won't allow a direct link...
Have you tried an ACPI update or installed ACPI drivers... ACPI controls fans within the OS... I read through the overclockers post and his model was an ASUS G50vt.. It lists an ACPI driver on their downloads section (under ATKACPI) and...
Could be, have found that DC jack issues throw up some wierd faults... Replacement or resoldering generally resolves it...

Ok, I bet the DC socket has a bad contact, however things to try first... 1) remove the hard drive and see if it powers up 2) Remove the RAM and try the same (sometimes you get a load of beeps, sometimes the lappy stays dead)... 3)...
