Sounds like it just may be the ribbon cable or it's connection. It does not sound like a cleaning issue, based on what you describe.

I am not sure why this is happening, however, it sounds like something that you should exercise your warranty, and not hold off on.
If it does not work with an external monitor, then it most likely is with the GPU, which means a motherboard replacement, unfortunately. Your model may be one that has a well-known issue and has an enchanced warranty, go here to check...
Along that line, you might actually try rolling back to an older wi-fi driver, and see what happens? It could be a driver issue, though of course, then agian maybe not.
It sounds as though the internal wireless card is out. Hate to say it, but that is not uncommon, particularly for certain models. You might want to check with HP's support site (if you have a computer that is on line), and check for bios...
I believe that drlouis is correct, that is just the way the graphic appears.
