some info, probably f2 for bios setup, seems like recovery is f11 gateway recovery cd's do not require a key code to activate a wndows install, this is automatic based on the gateway bios.

looked up the 6831 on gateway site, uses intel 945GM chipset, cpu is a socket M max memory is 4 gigs of 667 max cpu would be a T7600, T7400 would be close. the other cpus op mentioned are socket P & would not work

specs at Gateway for the MB say max of 4 gigs as I recall 4gig is a max for that Intel chipset as well

yes, the raised metal square in the center of the chip, is where the thermal compound should be applied, in a thin even coat, after cleaning with plain ole rubbing alcohol & a soft paper towel or cloth. good luck
