the spire is an excellent cooler. also check out coolers by vantec the 3 and 4 work well. if you're going to open the laptop up to clean it, then you might as well buy some artic silver and put that on the cpu.

definitely get a new laptop. especially since you want to get better battery life and not have to carry around a ton of accessories (e.g., dvd and wifi card). new ftw.

the compaw v2XXX series is an excellent all around computer if gaming is not important. if you buy one go for the larger battery and you'll get 5+ hours of life.
