My sony I got had major problems too. Dell fortunately exchanged me for the NEC drive. I would recommend the same and request the NEC drive specifically. Sometimes they are nice and will give you the "good" parts.
Disassembling the LCD unit itself is quite an insane task. Are you still under warranty? If you call Dell and explain what you said about the shape changing over time, etc... they may go ahead and just exchange you screens. Worth a try...
Good for you. I personally liked the 9100/XPS gen1. It was like a tank and very easy to repair. If it does act up again though, there is an issue with these things overheating.
