I'm getting a good twelve hours or so out of the shuffle.
Also might get the battery backup when it becomes available (a little thing with two aaa batteries that clips on), which extends the life another 20 hours, I believe.

I just bought my first apple product: the iPod Shuffle (I got the 1gb version)
