Mystery, The lighter it is in the room the harder this will be to do. About the lowest I go in my office which is well lit flourescent is 67%. You may be fine though. In dim light 50% is no problem. In my mind this is more of an issue...
The Compaq nx9420 is a good choice at 17" but now that the e1705 comes with the 7900GS this will be better for gaming (and you can get with 7900GS for $1,500). At 15.4" I recommend the S96j (though they are hard to get now).

What is your budget? Do you plan on gaming on it and if so what games?
Build quality of the S96j is very good. Definately better than Dell's Inspiron Line. I have compared directly with e1505 and 9300. I'm not that famliar with HPs notebooks.

For $50 shipped the best is Sony MDR-EX81LP. I have had 2 pairs of 81LPs and for the money they sound pretty good, not great. They are also very comfortable for an ear bud. They have some serious durability issues though. I would save...
