that's wierd becasue my desktop actually runs cooler in linux than in windows. kubuntu is around 39-40c idle and windows is 41-42c idle.
maybe try changing the bio setting to max battery if it's an option?
i think knoppix comes with gparted, or maybe qtparted, i'm not 100% sure...
will this mean that os x will be able to run on x86 pc's? i'd love to run os x as a replacement to windows alongside linux...

two os's cannot simultaneously boot. grub (or lilo) will let you pick which os you want to boot into when you first turn on your computer.
you can run kde on pretty much any distro. for noobs any debian-varient is good. kubuntu comes default with kde and is pretty simple to figure out.
buy a cheap desktop from dell... they have some for $500 with good-enough specs for just messing around with.
