Just replying to myself... I kept working at it, and finally succeeded. I guess the problem was that the ribbon cable isn't supposed to plug in very far... it goes a little way into the socket, and then the beige plastic clip goes on...

It just so happens I'm now having this problem too. For the life of me, I can't plug the ribbon cable into the socket. It goes in a tiny bit, but not enough to make contact with anything or even stay in. I push pretty hard, but don't...
