I think if I were reading a website it would actually be useful. I also think that it would be configurable and that if you wanted to just dim the entire screen it would be an option. That said I think its better to have more options...

To be honest... if you are going to limit yourself on price you would be better off investing as much as you can in 1st generation Centrino computers, such as the CL56 (approx 1400-1600) rather than a Sonoma. The performance/price ratio...
You know... now that I think of it... you might be able to snag a specced out Dell 9300 for that price. About the same specs as you said.
