I had a same problem with my T40 few years ago. Mine was a internal motherboard defect. your might be the same.
Actually, try removing your ram sticks and replacing it with different ones. It might solve the problem
It is very possible that you might have loosened up a insert while putting the ram stick in.
Its right underneath the touchpad right? if it is, than that might be the problem.
If it doesnt solve, then ya ill go do what steve said. remove...
i have a xp installed on my T60 and im having a similar problem. does your Rescue&Recovery and your restore Disk have different version? like i have a 4.1 on my disk while 4.2 on my T60.
im not a big tech geek here but im not sure if x300 would be a big enough screen size. its small and runs windows xp so the battery life can be longer but i think it only 13.3". I would much recomemd a T400/T500 or even a T60/T61....
