I'm pretty sure that's completely normal. Although I don't play many games, the 3d software I run does bog down a lot when I unplug the power cord; it will often take twice as long to render on battery than it does on AC power.
After using 3ds max 5 for a while, I can tell you that the performance is on par with the dual xeon systems I'm used to working on. You won't be dissapointed.
If you can afford to wait a year or so for the CG industry (at least on the workstation side) to move to 64bit, then I would wait. But if you're looking for something within the next few months, don't hold your breath for the A64...
Seeing as I should get my copy of 3dsmax tomorrow, I can tell you how fast it feels. I am getting the student version (which is just like full-blown commercial version), but I don't know if that comes with any benchmark scenes or not. ...

The idle process is not slowing down your encoding. It is merely reporting that 90% of the CPU is not being used. The problem is somewhere else in your system, not the idle process.
