I've tried another drive, same result, so it is not the drive.
This laptop has been through hell, I've fixed a cracked LCD and my cracked hinge. Now I want to reinstall XP, but it will not boot from the cd. I get the "press a key to boot from cd", which I do and it just sits there. And sometimes jsut shuts down after a while. Yet in WindowsXP it sees the cd fine and can read it. But if I stick in a DVD-R it thinks it is a RW and wants to erase it and format it. So I believe the issue is the drive. Is there a way to boot from...

No, the plastic casing that cracks doesn't hold the lcd on. It does hold some nuts for the screws though. And those may come loose, which causes the wooble, which lead to the metal fatiguing and cracking.
I know this is an old thread, but I have had one of my hinges crack completely off. The metal just snapped form being loose and opening and closing it. I did surgery and fixed it with a steal piece I cut with a dremel tool and then screwed back on. I also covered the cracked plastic covers with plumber epoxy. It seems to be holding.
