Tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times; chose to let xp control the wireless one time and the software for the wirless card another. Neither worked.

I have this same problem, though the router is linksys. Could never figure it out, another thread is in here with a couple suggestions from other people you might want to try. Ended up hiring somebody, he's coming over tomorrow so...
I used mine laying on the couch and it was fine. Not too hot or anything. The only thing I don't like is those three buttons on the front under the mouse; Can't tell you how manytimes I accitently opened MSOutlook.
