Have you checked that your HD is using DMA transfer mode and not PIO? Ive seen a few cases where the hard drive drops to pio mode and this causes the same problems you are seeing. Check in the hardware settings of your primary ide...

I had the same monitor flicker but only when on battery. Replaced the drivers with the standard drivers supplied and the flicker has gone. Don't know if it was the drivers i was using ( latest fron Nvidia) or if the problem will return...
