I have an 8887. It has fans and other vents on the bottom.
I use it on a tray on my lap to provide more than adequate ventilation to keep it from overheating and shutting down.

Please remember that there are two versions of WIN 95.
By the way, I have WIN98se successfully installed and running on a 486-DX100 with 500 mg hard drive.
If you can spare the extra drive space, 98se may be a better bet.

Thank you for this..... I've had other laptops, most recently a Gateway 9150, as well as desktops.... and have never heard this kind of consistent sound at shutdown. I had not connected that the sound could be related to the hard...

All I did the first couple of days was download and install updates... windows, mcafee, zonealarm, ad-aware, spybot and just a few apps -dtp, phtoedit, OpenOffice. So, all that stuff is up to date.
It come with WIN XP Pro...

THis 8887, P2.4, 1 gig RAM, WIN XP Pro, give an audible PING sound as the final effort of shutdown. THis has been consistent since I first got this used system a few weeks ago.
Is this sound customary?
