BIOS says the card is just "7800", no GS part. I also have 7950 GTX and the bios does say "7950 GTX".
So, is this a 7800GS ? The part number on it is GK185. (9400/m1710)
fans can run independently, ie HI-LO or LO-HI, so in your case the GPU fan was probably going HI most of the time and thus croaked sooner than CPU fan.
you might be able to take it apart and lubricate the center bearing, but i havent...
try latest nvidia drivers for ur card. they come with something called "Nivida Control Panel". If even that shows 0s, then you know u have hardware problem.
