The main reason I can see to get a 17" is to have a bigger and better screen. The biggest and best screen is the Sony Xbrite WUXGA of the A series. Therefore that is the best 17" laptop.

My A270 also will show a battery loss after shutdown. I'm not sure if it is a meter problem or an actual drain. I get about the same battery life (1.45-2.0) as you do, but it doesn't hugely worry me. I didn't get for the battery...
I've seen all three (as well as Toshiba and Compaq's). The Sony Xbrite and Fujitsu CrystalView seemed beat to me, with the Sony being best of the best.
